Wheels "ticking" during turns-fixed
I'm not sure if anyone has experienced this but I had an annoying ticking noise when I turned the wheel on my Z07.
The dealer cleaned the back of the wheels and re-torqued them. This fixed the problem. Apparently a lot of people are experiencing this. Just thought I would share |

So just clean the back of the wheel where it meets the hub and that's it? Any type of cleaning solution that needs to be used?

They have powdercoated the front hub. You have to clean paint off of mounting suface. The rear hubs are bare metal. Solved my issue.

HA! I got tons of ticking after putting on the Cup wheels and ZR1 pads. I thought it was something I did. Some of you are getting this with entirely stock setup?

They will clean the hub too. Soap and water or wire brush? IDK.

they did this on mine. fixed it temporarily.

I took and replaced my wheels with powder coated ZR1 cups and no issue.
13,200 miles. |
Zero "ticking" after the dealer cleaned my hubs. Only other maintenance I've done to help this issue is re-torque the lug nuts after race events or some heavy spirited driving.

Interesting...I did notice this ticking with the stock wheels on my Z07. Never thought much about it, but it has not happened since I switched to my forgelines.

Mine did it, they cleaned the wheels and put them back on, its already doing it again.

They had this problem on the Gen 2 CTSv's. Several tech bulletins were issued.
1) the first one (2010-2011?) was to remove wheels, clean mating surfaces, and retorque the wheels (maybe to 160 foot pounds?). Seemed a temporary fix for me. 2) Next bulletin was to replace the front wheels with "modified" wheels that had slits machined into the mating surfaces. Also a temporary fix for me, but clicking was milder when it returned. 3) the last and final bulletin that I knew of was to replace the lug nuts with a new part number. This worked for me (didn't really care at that point; it was not a big deal), but I sold the car within 5K miles or so of having it done. Haven't noticed it yet in the Z06 but I won't let it drive me nuts when I do notice it...... |
This is why they should be Hub Centric wheels, not lug centric... I have aftermarket wheels that are hub centric and I do not have this issue. So here is a thought, we need to measure the hub on the factory wheel then the actual hub, should be able to purchase hub rings often used on aftermarket wheels and I bet this will resolve the issue... Should be a cheap fix as well. Bet your car will drive smoother on the road as well, mine did after swapping to aftermarket wheels!

I also have a rather loud click on some after market wheels. But, it only happens when I make a slow sharp right turn. It also happens once each time the wheel makes a full revolution. I will do more research tomorrow. Cecil............

I had the same problem with my 2011 Cadillac CTS-V....dealer started out cleaning back of wheels and hubs; that worked for a while. Finally, a service bulletin came out directing the dealers to exchange the stock Brembo rotors for a 2 piece rotors; that worked for a while. Long story short...final bulletin said they should use a different type of lug nut and torque to 115 ft pounds rather than the 140 shown in the service manual. That was the last fix done to my car and seemed to fix the problem.

Most of the ticking heard has to do with the 'Floating Rotor' design of the brakes.

The clicking on mine is always from the rear rotors. The dealer removed and cleaned the rust from them 3 times now and it worked for a couple of weeks.
Recently I drove 4 new Z06/7's while at Spring Mountain. Each of them had the same clicking at initial take off. I decided that I really don't want any dealer removing the wheels anymore for a temporary fix. There is too great a likelyhood that they crack a ceramic rotor and then say it was that way when I brought it in. They have been denying cracked rotor claims caused by damage. |

Sorry to resurrect this old thread, but my dealer just found the source of ticking in both my front tires (Z06/Z07). The ticking would happen when you turn to the right or left. It sounded like a pebble stuck in the tire.
Like the OP, the dealer did eventually remove the wheels and clean the hub and the back of the wheel. And stuck someplace in the hub on both sides was the tail end of a zip tie! (The part that you cut off after tightening the zip tie.) Apparently they zip tie something in place there when the car is built, except with mine they didn't both to remove the part they snipped off, and it got stuck in there. Ticking gone! :) |
