What's up with Mobil 1?
 

Will there be a run on Mobil 1? It seems the shelves are emtying out of our trusted 5W-30 Mobil 1. Does anybody know if Mobil 1 is going away being replaced with their new mileage oils? So the question will be, what to use in place of Mobil 1? :willy: :willy:

If teh "good stuff" goes away (which I doubt it will...it'd be like Cheerios giving way to a berry variety), I'd re-fill with Amsoil while I researched a solid "regular" oil for the next time around.

I don't know but local shelfs are empty or near empty... that's why I bought a year's worth of oil changes for my 3 vehicles.

I have never used Amsoil.... I know it is one of if not the original synthetic oils. But I have never researched it.
Is it API certified.?... some reading I have done claims some oils( they alledge Amsoil included ) have too much Zinc Dialkyl Dithio Phospate ( an extreme pressure additive) to be approved. The alledged problem with ZDDP is that it causes embrittleness and failure of aluminum engine components.

thats y i use royal purple and will never go back to any other oil. this stuff is great.

The shelves are near empty? Here in San Diego, Mobil1 5w30 is almost all any place carries. The shelves are always packed, and next to those are the huge crates of them to buy in bulk.:confused:

One of those "new" high-mileage oils IS Mobil 1....the 15K miles one.

Even if Mobil stopped making the Big 1, there is still a bunch of other brands of great synthetic oil; Valvoline, Redline, RP, Amzoil, etc. that will work just as well.

What ever oil you use, just remember that all oils get contaminated by acidic blow-by gasses and unburnt fuel so they need to be changed regularly, synthetic or organic.

:iagree: Yea, that's what I gathered from reading the labels on the bottles at Wally-Mart the other day. The 5,000 is dino, 10,000 is synthetic blend, and 15,000 is full synthetic.

Just the same, there were still some of the old-style 1's left on the shelves, so I grabbed some to use in a few months on my next oil change.

Just an FYI--everyone in the engine oil industry is starting to ship out product for the newest industry specs--API SM and ILSAC GF-4. These new formulations should provide the same level of protection as the prior-spec oil but for a longer interval and with better fuel economy.

In addition, GM has been worried about catalytic converter poisoning for awhile and has pushed the industry to reduce the amount of some anti-wear additives (zinc and phosphorus, I think). Engine oil manufacturers have come up with different approaches for providing similar levels of anti-wear protection, but you're also seeing guys like Valvoline entering the oil additive business with such things as "SynPower Oil Treatment" so users can put back some of those "proven additives".

You should start seeing the new Mobil 1 in shelves soon, and they've come up with Mobil 1 EP for folks who want to extend their drain interval up to 15K miles or one year.

I just checked at Costco junction rt 15 & I-80 Wharton NJ and they had plenty, but I picked up a couple 6 packs just in case.

Here, Wal-Mart was always the cheapest place by far to get M1. It's been $3.38 a qt. for some time. Now, with the new formulation, it's jumped to over $5.00. We're being conned in my opinion. I can and will switch brands before I'll be gouged further by a big oil company.

I take my vette into the local dealership for my oil changes. For the price they charge, it's worth it for me not to have to store used oil, get messy, etc (I can feel my testicles shrinking as I type this).

That being said, what exactly, then, is the GM Goodwrench verion of M1 that they use in the shop? It has to be GM4718M, so who makes it? M1? If we're that concerned with tghe availablilty of M1, why not just stock up on an oil that simlpy meets spec GM4718M? Or am I missing something here????
