HUD In A Shark...

Has anybody ever put a heads up display like the C5s have into a shark? Is it even possible to do?

MEGALADON 04-07-2005 08:25 PM

that would be so KKEEWWLLL :yesnod:

Ak. Mal 04-08-2005 01:27 AM

That one would be kind of hard to pull off since the tops of the C3 dash is so much shorter in depth than the C5s.

I would be pretty kewl though.

Miz101 04-08-2005 02:23 AM

Yeah that would be nice to have. It would be interesting to see how someone would pull it off though.

GrandSportC3 04-08-2005 08:33 AM

You'd also have to find someone to make a coated windshield for a C3. A regular windshield won't work...

SnoDrgn 04-08-2005 02:02 PM

possible? probably
worth it? doubtful
:leaving:

You don't need a "special" coating on a windshield to make it work. It is nothing more than a reflection in the windshield at the proper angle and placement to be seen from the driver's seat.

In 1995 I had a bag phone that sat on the transmission hump of my truck. When the phone rang, the display light up in that ugly yellow color and said "Call" about 1 second before the ringer went off. I knew when I was getting a call before my passengers because the reflection of the display was in my field of vision.

Take a look at this:
http://www.defi-shop.com/product/con...ncept_top.html

I couldn't find any prices so I'm sure if you have to ask you can't afford it.

I think you would need an electronic tach signal and a speed sensor signal
http://hp.autometer.com/products/acc...do_sender.html

I don't think I would want to be the guinea pig trying to get a bunch of expensive stuff to work in a custom who knows if it will work application.

barkingowl 04-08-2005 04:46 PM

I just sent them an email asking about pricing & availabliity. I'll let y'all know what they have to say.

bhays 04-08-2005 06:27 PM

I had one of those in a Dodge Stratus (the defi one). Pretty neat.

DonBecker 04-09-2005 11:02 AM

From what I see, it's just a simple VFD (vacuum fluorescent display). They are essentially REALLY bright LCD's.

Let me get you a link to cheap ones.

BTW, their pic on the website looks terrible with it sitting on the dash like that.

DonBecker 04-09-2005 11:05 AM

You can use this free program to manage the display on the lcd...you can download it and try it out, even if you don't have an lcd, it will show a little box on your computer to show the info (that would be displayed on the lcd).

My uncle has a C5 with the HUD, now you've got me interested, I'll have to go over and check his out up close!

Still gotta take the input from engine sensors and get it to output on the vfd, no small feat.

I agree about it looking terrible sitting on the dash like that, my thought had always been to put it in the driver side dash speaker location and make a vinyl covered bezel to fill in around it.

barkingowl 04-13-2005 10:17 AM

It does look terrible sitting like that on the dash. I finally heard back from the people in Japan. As regards to pricing they gave me a link to the retailers in the US that carry the box.

I'm going to check out prices & see how  or :) they are.

BTW Don my C5 has a HUD as well. I've heard people talking about integrating their radar detectors into the HUD too. I think that would be a  stealth project for our cars as well.

The HUD unit by itself is $303!

timbo79 04-13-2005 12:59 PM

It seems you could mount that in the speaker area and make a custom surround for it. It would then look pretty stock. A little concerned on the angle of the windshield. In concept, it would not look bad if modified correctly. Price would be a good thing to know. I bet it is over 1k.... then no way

hmm. . .if you switch over to all electronic autometer guages, could you later retrofit it with HUD? is there a way to switch the electrical inputs over so they'll register right for the display?
i'd be happy with MPH and RPM . . .

timbo79 04-13-2005 01:51 PM

You can get a VSS sender that can attach to the transmission to get a signal for speedo. Sam with tach. I am running MSDbox so that will also work I do believe. For the rest I think you need their senders. When I switched to my autometers I had to install a new oil pressure sender and H2O sender...

Always liked the idea of a HUD if blended in well.

I wonder if it would handle the heat of the Arizona sun on the dash, say at the mall for several hours on Saturdays. Outside Air temp at 117, interior temp >145 (my thermometer blanked after that) and "in the sun" dash temps? maybe 160 to 180? I think I'd end up finding out how good their warranty was.

jn76vette 04-13-2005 09:40 PM

looks like it would be cool

That's a good question. I wonder what the lowest temps it could handle would be as well. We'll have to have someone in Canada install one too.

81 Vette 04-13-2005 10:37 PM

pick me pick me pick me!!!!!

barkingowl 04-13-2005 11:26 PM

:D How would the sensors be placed & the wiring routed? I'm an electrical newbie. :bb

81 Vette 04-14-2005 01:21 AM

neither should be a problem, any sensor wiring just goes through the firewall and there is a fair bit of room under the dash to run up to the HUD unit... I think its doable. I should ask my audio installer guy about it, hes crazy ALL day that guy, if its possible, he'll know.

  You could ask him if the song titles could be displayed on it too. :D

PhotoVette1 04-14-2005 10:06 AM

I just bought a HUD system off ebay; to experiment with. Then I thought to myself that it's really pointless--as long as the radar detector is on the dash, I have all the speed information I need. Light goes on, apply brakes...

81 Vette 04-14-2005 03:02 PM

Yea but there is a coolness factor about it though, I mean Corvettes are cool already, but why not try to get a new toy? :D I havent had a chance to go talk to the boys at the shop, Im in the middle of exams :ack: not a lot of fun, but Ill talk to him sooner or later. If anyone else has any idea though, I think HUD would be badass.

if you happen to drive *ahem* "spiritedly" it lets you watch your speed and RPM's without the danger of taking your eyes off the road, so it's got some practical value as well.
i've got a column-mounted tach at the moment, and it's killing me to have to stop, look down and check what i'm turning to decide to shift or not. better to be able to check it without looking down . . .

good luck with exams!

barkingowl 04-14-2005 05:13 PM

I have the HUD in my C5 & it is really handy to be able to look over the steering wheel & see all the information displayed. Often if its off & I try to glance at the gauges I worry that in the instant that I drop my eyes something might change for the worse on the road ahead. I think that the technology is long overdue for us & I'm sure that we can find a way to adapt it to our needs.

BBShark 04-14-2005 05:54 PM

Using the C5 HUD would require the use of a couple of C5 "contol modules". You would need (at least) the ECM, BCM and many of the sensors or some type of emulation. They are all interrelated. For example, the radio communicates with the gauge cluster. If you are driving along in your C5 at 38mph with your drivers window down, this information is transferred to your radio and the volume is adjusted! This is just the tip of the iceburg. You could probably disable this and other functions but it would require a development program that would be expensive.

The aftermarket HUD that was referred to earlier in this post is probably the only option however a number of people on other forums have had difficulties with the installation.

81 Vette 04-14-2005 06:09 PM

Yea that dynamic range volume controler is standard on a lot of aftermarket HU and it is no big deal to turn it off. I think aftermarket would be the only way to go, I think as logn as youre using all electric guages there will be a way to wire the HUD with that info. Im confident its possible.

81 Vette 04-15-2005 04:25 PM

Aight boys, well after pondering a few things and getting some advice, I have come ot the conclusion that it IS entirely possible to do a HUD system in a C3.

http://www.defi-shop.com/product/con...ncept_top.html

This system from DEFI utilizes their own sensors that go to a sort of CPU and redistribution center, you use their guages, their sensors, their CPU thing, their HUD unit, and its all gravey. Its the best all-inclusive system Ive seen, in fact its the only all inclusive system Ive seen. I dont see a reason why it wont work, unless you can tell me otherwise!
