clutch replacement?
 

so i was driving up a biug hill yesterday in 6th and press the gas and the RPMS went up about 300 but the speed didnt
then the rpms went back down to where they normally are and i had acceleration
I think thats the clutch slipping
under full throttle in 6th gear the clutch doesnt slip but if you left off gas (without pressing the clutch pedal) and then press it again you get a minor slip

i was like damn time for a clutch
then on my way home from work yesterday it was fine
couldnt get it to do it again
the vette is a 98 with 41k on it
mods are rm racing intake and rk sport longtubes

so heres the questions
is the clutch done? or is it possible the slave or master cylinder?
my clutch pedal has about 1.5 inches of absolutely loose play in it at the very top (zero to nil resistance) i never hav had the sticky pedal issue
lately my clutch has felt really grabby though
could be me being nutz but it sure has felt grabby lately

alright so lets say its toast
the z06 clutch seems to be the way to go
anyone know of a better idea for the same cash?
do i need to replace my flywheel?
from what ive read with the search function it seems i should replace

the slave cylinder
the master cylinder
clutch disk
and pressure plate
am i missing anything?
what else should i do while im down there?

what about the remote bleeder?

Going up a big hill in 6th gear seems harsh - were you going 80mph or faster at the time? I would try downshifting first before concluding that your clutch is toast. If it is, I recommend the full newest Z06 clutch kit, with pilot bearing, master cyl. optional. While the car is in pieces, adding the remote bleeder is a good idea.

went today and chevy stealer wanted 1000 in labor
went down the street to a clutch shop they wanted 400
sold

need to go and get the parts now
do i need a flywheel?
the guy at the clutch shop said this car is particlarly suseptible to imbalance and i should get a new flywheel with the z06 clutch kit


does the clutch kit include a flywheel?

$400 is a great price for the install!

Gene @ Fred Beans will sell you a Z06 clutch for about $380 shipped. That includes the clutch plate, pressure plate and flywheel. Also get a new slave from him for $100 more:

The master can be changed after if needed and does not involve removing the clutch.

Get a bleeder extender for sure from LAPD.

This probably goes without saying, but you are sure they have done C5 clutches? It is a lot more work than most rear drive cars.

or whatever 6.1 hours by 65$ an hour is

ill get it in writing before they start
they are clutch specialist so hopefully they know what they are talking about

I look at it this way
I can do it myself but it may takeme a week to get it done and who knows whatill f up along the way
for 400 i can have it back in a day and its there ass if they break something

A clutch R&R in a C5 is much more than six hours of work.

yea chevy looked in thier book and siad 9.1 hours

this guy looks in his book and says

"we can get it done for 396.50, thats 6.1 hours @ 65$ an hour and we can probably do it quicker...396.50 is the most itll cost"


he was looking at a book when he quoted it so who knows

but then he said 1300 for the clutch parts
I told him i wanted to go up to summit and see what they had for clutches before i paid 1300 for a stock unit

do i need a z06 master cylinder ? with the z06 clutch kit and slave?

all right ive started thinking about ti and i might just do it myself now
i was thinking about painting my headers with black high temp paint and chaning the tranny and differential fluid

so if ido it myselfi can do all those all at once and probably considerably easier than if it were in

i have dopes install guide and thats actually what convinced me to do it myself

i have some questions though

im putting a whole new clutch pp flywheel pilot bearing and slave in

ive heard the flywheels have balancing weights in them so what the hell do i do with those?

is it just a remove from one flywheen and put in thenext then bolt it up in the smae spot?

also ive heard of peoplke replacing the rear main seal while they are under there should i even bother?
i have 40k on the car

my concerns are bleeding the slave and balancing the flywheel but thats it

the rest looks liek simple bolt up bolt off crap

anyone know abotu the balancing and the bleeding?

Like I said above the master can be changed without taking the clutch out, so you can do the clutch and slave now and the master after if needed.

Get 2 tranny jacks from harbor freight.

You don't need to balance the flywheel or pressure plate. Its already done at the factory.

How do you disconnect the connector on the hydraulic line? Thats a weird looking connector.

im not gonan get the bleeding extender
its 86 bucks
i cant justify 86$ for a piece of metai braided piping
maybe after i have to take the car apart to bleed it i will but at this point im just not convinced

As you can see from "my corvette photos" I've done the DIY OEM clutch replacement.
//A new slave cyl is already primed and does not need bled..
//A new master is also primed and does not need bled,,if your not replacing,you can flush the old fluid from the master by reconnecting the old slave line[after removing from torque tube]to master and while keeping the the reservior full,open the slave bleeder valve and gravity will flush the master with new fluid..
//I transfered flywheel weight[s] to new unit..

Borrow a pilot bearing puller from AutoZone..
trans jack and fly wheel holding tool from harbour freight
clutch pilot tool from AZ or ADV auto parts

I replaced both axle seals while unit was removed from car..
If you have a later 98 with out the rear mounted EBCM module it
will be much easier to remove the drive line

Yes - I would also get the Z06 slave and master.
