need timing help

we have been having a lot of problems with pop-backs and i can hear it popping threw the pipes when on the gas. this is what i think is wrong.

i think something is messed up with the vacuum advance, and possibly the springs under the cap that the weights use to return. the springs look worn out.
does this sound logical? what should i set the initial timing at and what springs should i use to get the proper timing curve?

the car is also slow to rev up and has a psudo-bog till about 3K. its a points and condensor system with a mechanical teach.

It could be tired points...bad dwell...if you are not to attached to the points you can put in a pick up coil in your original distributor they are real slick & work great.

we just replaced the points and condensor, and set the dwell a few weeks ago. ever sence we installed that tach cable it has not been running right. my dad had to turn the distributor to install the cable. could the cable be draging the distributor some how?

Gordonm 08-17-2005 02:14 PM

No, it would snap the cable or strip the gears before it would drag anything. If he turned it did he put it back in the same spot. Reset the timing if it has moved at all.

If he turned the distributor, he changed the timing..make sure it is back to your spec...

there is no timing mark on the car for some reason or another... so we just kinda "eyeball" it. we looses up the dist. a little so you can turn it by putting a screwdriver in the cap and use the screwdriver as a lever to turn it. i got it about right. but it still pops threw the carb once and a while. it revs a lot quicker from 1200 rpm to about 3900 rpm then it begins to pop threw the pipes which to me is a symptom of a retarted condition. could the vaccume advance be frozen? i bought a recurve kit and that helped quite a bit. the springs in the distributor were worn out for sure! also i noticed out accelerator pump cam is on pos. 2 (the steep one) could this be part of the problem. the popping condition is worse when the motor is cold. it also has a case of run-on. i need lars to do a house call!
