Pic wanted for Right Hand drive vette
My vette is converted to Right Hand drive - the heater/aircon and brake master cylinder are swapped over and the heater box with blower motor is fitted upside down.
My blower module has failed. Because of the conversion it is now underneath the box, and must be fairly close to the crossmember. I jacked the car up but haven't located it yet. Could anyone post a link here or email me a pic of their blower module and where it fits into the box -it's normally on the top of the blower box and should be easy to see. Then I'll know what parts to remove to get at it!!! Here's a pic of my engine and heater box on LH Side - http://www.users.bigpond.com/mpheale...tte/LHSide.jpg Thanks S'nut |

Funny this thread should come up.
I was wondering about the RHD conversion this afternoon. A long time ago, I saw a converted C3 in Melbourne. While I was hitching in the middle of the north island of NZ, a lady stopped to give me a ride in her '69 Mustang. Both cars were impeccably done - from the interior it looked like someone had flipped the negative. Yet, there has to be a LOT of reengineering involved. How do these conversion come about? . |
WOW!! Thanks slalom4me for such a quick reply.
Good pics, now I know what I'm looking for. There appears to be two bolts of same size and a slightly smaller one - is the module just held by the two main bolts? One of our local car makers, Holden, is GM based, so some parts are available here - but many are not. I tried to look this module up on the AC Delco site, so that I could check the part number with the Holden dealer tomorrow, but I couldn't locate it. I expect I'll have to mail order it from the US. Where would you suggest I get a blower module from? Re the Right Hand drive conversion - in my state of Queensland vehicles less than 30 years old have to be right hand drive. As you say the conversion is very complicated - and expensive. Current conversion prices in this state, at Corvette Queensland, in Aus$ are CORVETTE 1968-82 $11,000.00 Inc GST 1984-89 $14,300.00 Inc GST 1990-96 $24,200.00 Inc GST 1997-on $29,700.00 Inc GST http://www.corvette.com.au/ This considerably increases the cost of owning a Corvette -so although my vette might be worth US$6-$8,000 in America - here it has an agreed insurance value of $38,000. And they're still old cars and all these parts fail - like the blower module. There were many back street converters, of all standards - el cheapo conversions where they just knock a hole through the evaporator for the steering column!! and up to high quality conversions where they have fibreglass moulds for the interior parts that can't just be crossed over. Recent govt licensing regulations have made it too expensive for all except the large scale converters to operate and this has removed the shonky ones, but unfortunately has also removed some of the small volume, but high quality, converters. I've seen a converted C5 and all the drivers door switches were on the RHside and you couldn't pick that the contoured armrest etc was all made specially. On the C4, the main conversion, like mine, involves things like inverting the wiring loom behind the dash - relocating the brakes and pedals to the RH Side, and fitting the heater box upside down on the Left. Here's a pic of my dash - I've fitted sheepskin inserts to the leather seats as it's way too hot here to sit on leather - also to the armrest which is extremely nice!!! http://www.users.bigpond.com/mpheale...te/Stereo2.jpg It makes finding things a bit difficult - like the courtesy lights dimmer module, which I recently fixed and posted a tech tip on -http://www.corvettesdownunder.com.au/pages/Dimmer.htm The converted C4 uses a steering rack from another vehicle which I think is front wheel drive - it appears to be a well kept secret!! and each converter uses a rack from a different vehicle. They also have to weld new brackets to the front crossframe for the steering linkages. I was in the UK in June and went to their Summer Corvette nats - nearly all of their vettes are still LHDrive. I think that would be much better not to alter the vette the way we do, although I have heard of people who find it difficult and a bit dangerous to be driving LHD in a RHD country. thanks again S'nut |

Excellent pic, thanks slalom4me - as you can appreciate, I may be working unsighted down there.
Any advice on were to find the part number? and where to order from? Yes the trams still run in Melbourne - here's a link http://www.yarratrams.com.au/ but I am more of a stranger to the trams than you - I live in Cairns - the opposite end of the country, so it's about same distance away as New York to New Orleans. I drove through Melbourne once, in 1974!! S'nut |

a rather nice performance vehicle that they obligingly export to North America. Sadly, not to Canada. If I had my way, we'd take all the ones that the GTO purists keep turning their noses up at.

decline sales to overseas destinations. Still, it couldn't hurt to try contacting forum supporters like Ecklers, Mid America or GMPartsDirect (although many have written that GMPD really sticks them on shipping.) Also many have had great experiences with Superior Chevrolet.

sparsely attended. Thanks for the background. Of course the regulation is a non-tariff barrier to help support the industry. Interestingly, Ford of Canada used to build RHD cars for export to Oz and NZ quite a while ago. With the 30 yr stipulation, is there a market now for pre-75's? While the racks are from non-Corvettes, I wonder if they are still TRW units? All in all, 'Vette enthusiasts living under the Southern Cross really take the hobby to another level. . |

Thanks, that's an excellent pic of the module removed - does that mean that the plate with 3 bolts red circles doesn't have to be removed?
Maybe the module is held in by a clip like the plug? S'nut |

red circles doesn't have to be removed? Just going from the photos, the plate appears to have molded female receptacles for the WeatherPak connectors. The module and its heat sink appear to be held to the bottom of the cover plate by the two smaller screws (white circles) - I imagine that there are connectors that extend up into the molded receptacles of the cover. Since I don't know for certain, perhaps you might PM '89_Paul_in_Cal' if this is something on which you want clairification. . |
"While the racks are from non-Corvettes, I wonder if they are still TRW units?"
The rack in my RHD conversion is physically identical to a Vette one (I have a genuine Vette one as well ) except in it's OE state it was mounted in front of the X-member.Inverted and mounted behind it fits perfect .Nothing on the rack has been modded except for new mounts on the chassis. Given that my '87 was converted in '89 it would have to be from something of that era. Have been told that Buick racks are the ones but unable to confirm. |
slalom4me, rodj has sent me some good pics - thanks to your pics and his, I now have a good idea of what to do.
Many thanks for all the help. rodj - I think you'll be a mine of information re the conversion - I'll stay in touch. S'nut |

Had to get a friend to do it as i couldnt get in there, wasn't as bad a job as we first thought but took around an hour. have a good pic of it but not sure how to post it here so if you pm me your email i can email it to you.
If you call dave at Ponti World he can get you one as i think he keeps them in stock now. ph 0242571230 or www.usgmserviceparts.com. |

S'nut ps, can I borrow the fella with the small hands ? |
I fitted the new module and all is working fine again - thanks to everyone who helped, the pictures were all extremely useful - especially with the airbox being upside down!!!

Glad to hear all went well. How many Vegemite sandwiches did it take to get the neighbor's child to reach up in there and help with the wrenching. . |
Of course you meant to say 'Down Under.' S'nut |
I was just reading this thread regarding the RHD conversions, my vette was converted in Melb. i think (before i had it) cost $18k apparently
But the blower and Master cylinder are not crossed over! which got me worried! when the previous owner had it racing he had it checked out by 3 race shops for safety and they said it was very neat. does anyone else hare have a RHD with master cylinder on the LHS??? Joe. |
Hi AusJoe, I did some research on RHD convertions before buying my 88.
If your brakes and aircon are not moved then I would guess that either you have a chain drive - which, from my research, I believe is a very good idea - despite the bad press it seems to get - or you have a 'Stick the steering through the evaporator/heater core' - bad conversion - there may be other variations - but they are my first thoughts - I'm sure rodj and other experts will chip in here and sort it out for you. Do you know of the NSW forum - it's the only forum I know of in Aus - not fast moving like this forum but in your case may be more useful as it's all Aussie vettes - http://www.nswcorvettes.com.au/forum/index.php S'nut |
