I am going with the ZZ4 motor for $3300.
You could start with that. I have heard that an different cam in that one alone will get you 430 HP on pump gas.
To me reliability is an issue. That is why I am going with a GM built motor.

I figure the ZZ4 with either a 670 or 770 CFM Holley, new headers, upgrade the ignition system, fuel pump and misc. items will cost me $4200 - $4400.

Buy the new Chevy High Performance mag. It has good info from the experts. For $5,000 nothing less than 400 hp.

I've built a ZZ430 - without the 4bolt mains. 1991-93 Caprice service engine ($1500), GM Aluminum Fast Burn Heads ($1100), LT4 Hot Cam ($250), Crane Roller Rockers 1.6:1 ($300), Edelbrock Performer RPM Vortec ($200), Cast Aluminum Center Bold Valve Covers (Jim Pace - $250).

You'll need some other odds and ends (new flywheel or flexplate, dipstick, etc.) The package is rated at 430HP. I'm currently running it with EFI, and I couldn't be happier. It's very well mannered on the street, and runs 13.6 w/3.55 gears out back.

Crate engines etc. are great but for 5 grand I would take mine
to a GOOD engine builder and have him go nuts with
a 383 stroker. Should be good for 450 HP+ :bigears

GM Crate motor, it's a 454 HO that puts out 425hp and I think it cost $4,200.00. That should give ya some serious torque or move up to the 502 motor.

Re: Best Engine Build up Possible (vettetester)

Okay, I'm looking to build an engine in the next year or so as well. I'm not sure entirely of what I want yet. I'm willing to spend about $10,000, eventually, and don't worry about headers/intake -- I just want a long block. I want an engine that will rev out about 8,000, be able to handle about 10-14 lbs of boost, and maybe a small shot of nitrous. Am I asking too much in my price range? What should I look for? For those kind of revs I was thinking maybe a 327 is the way to go... I don't know if I could get a stroker revving that high reliably without more money, but I'd love more cubes. Maybe stick with standard-stroke 350? Thoughts?

I am SLOWLY doing the following...

GM ZZ4 shortblock or the HT383 (if they haven't raised the price as I've heard). the 383 comes with vortec heads and intake...take those off and sell em. Both short blocks have forged crank, PM rods, HT pistons. Both are built for roller cams, the 383 comes with one but sell that too.

chevy roller cam & lifters. Roller rockers on AFR or Trick Flow heads. Edlebrock performer intake (to fit under stock hood), ported if necessary. Z28 oil pump. road race pan. Moroso pressurized oil resevoir. MSD ignition. centerforce clutch, dynomax headers, stage 2 q-jet carb, aluminum water pump...and wah-la :smash:
