new rack-question on centering it vs tie rods

I just put in a new rack- if I center the rack/steering wheel for equal turns in both directions then the threads on the tie rods are unequal by about 1/3 inch. If I turn the tie rods for equal threads showing then it turns further to the right than the left. I'd like to center the rack but don't want to leave too little threads threaded on the drivers side tie rod. I noticed the old rack was the same way-the rack was not centered. Is it just my car or is this common???????? (still not too sure of the new software in here!)

this is actually common. You want to center the wheel and rack as best you can, then take it in for alignment. The threads will not be equal on each tie rod end. What's important is that the rack and wheel are centered with the tires at alignment time. That way, the wheel won't lock earlier on one side than it does the other after alignment.
