Thinking on selling 82 for C4, what year to buy?

I've now had my 1982 Corvette for a year now, and have loved every minute of it, however, I have been dying to own a C4 for a while now. I would like something in the late 80's/early 90's with a Greenwood body kit, 6-speed, power everything, AC, and it all has to be black with black interior (no exceptions). I'm not too fond of the digital dash, and would like to stick with the later anolog/digital style, but I'm willing to comprimise. I'm looking for advise regarding what I should look out for and avoid regarding the C4 (years, options, etc.) and any other tips or opinions regarding a future purchase of one of these machines. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Everything that I have read says to buy the newest and cleanest that you can afford! There are no bad years, each year gets a little more refined than the last. It is cheaper to buy a clean model than to buy a fixer-upper, if you are looking for something other than a daily driver, so condition counts a lot. The later years perform better than the earlier, but you can always modify. Good luck!!

Always the best advice, buy the best you can afford!

Given that, I'd suggest at least an 88 or 89, 17 inch wheels, etc

L98 is a great engine, though lacking the later years pizzas!

Suggest a vert rather than a coupe, personal reasons!

My own wants would be a ZR1 or an LT4

It sounds like you already know what you want. Good luck finding one with the greenwood kit. I would go with the advice given above. I will add two things: 1) I dont recommend an '84 2) this is just my preference, get a '92 or newer for the LT-1 or better engine.

You really should list you budget.

BTW, its a big shame that you gotta get rid of the '82. C3s are getting fewer and far between. They are looking better everytime I see one.

Trust me, I'll be staying away from the 84. I've had enough Crossfire experience for a long time. I'm trying to stay below the $20,000 mark right now. I also do not want another project car (have too many project cars right now), but would like something that is in excellent condition. Minor flaws are fine, as would be found in any used car.

The Corvette Black Book lists the major changes each model year, and should be your Bible for awhile.
(I would suggest either a '93 or '96 since I gotta sell ONE of mine, but they sure don't meet your specifications) http://www.corvetteforum.cc/ubb/smile.gif

Given your budget you can easily find a mint 92 to 95 C4. Go with the LT1.

Almost any decent LT4 will run you over 20k.

Go for a 96 LT4, you won't be disappointed. Good color choice, also. http://www.corvetteforum.cc/ubb/smile.gif

I hate to say it, but if you are in the 20k territory looking for a Corvette, you are probably in a buyer's market. If you look around, and stay posted to the forum, you should be able to find a great car! :yesnod:

Where can you buy a decent LT4 for under 20k?

Does anyone bother to read the criteria?

I BOUGHT A VERY WELL KEPT 87 ROADSTER FOR $8K LAST YEAR AND HAVE LOVED EVERY MINUTE OF IT. THE CAR IS VERY DIFFERENT FROM MY SON'S 79 L82. MORE DRIVERS SPACE, VERY FAST AND GREAT MPG http://www.corvetteforum.cc/ubb/smile.gif BUY THE LATEST MODEL,LOWEST MILEGE. BEST CONDITION EXAMPLE YOU CAN!

Re: Thinking on selling 82 for C4, what year to buy? (96LT4)

My cutoff year was '94 because:

Passenger side airbag
New refrigerant (sp?) in the A/C
White lettering on dash

So, I ended up with one. Now I have the Opti issue to deal with in about 20,000 miles, something that I'll happily live with. The newer the better!
