vertical doors...

GT Foctory Diablo hinges to be specific. The shop I went to refused to install due to some legal jumbo about the little bit of grinding and welding necessary to mount the hinges to the frame. Has anyone else run across this situation? I'm in Phoenix if anyone knows of a good custom body shop! :willy:

KnightRider02 01-13-2006 04:27 PM

There shouldnt be any welding to the frame. I bought mine from West Coast Corvette and there was a little fender trimming but the hinges bolted right up. Just be careful with this kit.

What can I say, find another body shop!

Sportsdude 01-13-2006 05:04 PM

I thought GT Factory has bolt on version? Locate another reputable shop

GTFactory has a bolt on version, but costs 2.5X as much as the weld on version.

Plus WCC sells only the verticaldoors.com brand unless they recently changed and these are the best but do require door/fender edge modifications but do bolt on.

I think the GTFactory kit is better than verticaldoors.com (I have verticaldoors.com) because their hinges don't sway when in open position.

HOWEVER, they BOTH suck all around, because they have problems hitting the door striker upon closing.

Sure, they look great, but it all depends if it's worth it to you for the pain and embarassment when you go to close your door and you hear the banging of metal against fiberglass when you miss.

So it looks  parked with the doors open...or...narrow parking spots.

Frizzle86 01-14-2006 02:41 PM

Say your car is slammed like EG's ride, and you park on the street yet the curb is like 6 inches High :willy: Vertical doors would come in handy.

vectorz 01-14-2006 03:20 PM

Oh, one more word of advice. If any reason (besides that the quality sucks) that you should stay away from the 'www.verticaldoors.com' kit, do it because their customer service is really bad.

My kit didn't come w/ the wiring loom (harness cover) and when I asked them why it didn't they simply said "because when we have them in stock we do and when we don't we won't". The attitude was such that they had my money so they didn't want to bother with me any further. I tried escalating it all the way up to the owner, but he would ignore me as if I was a hobo on the street (that just paid ~$2500 for his product).

So with that in mind, I hope it helps make your decision easier. If you *do* decide to go w/ a kit, don't make it the verticaldoors.com kit.

I assume you have them on yours...still? If you don't like them why then don't you go back to stock? Were they improperly installed? Are they easily adjustable after the fender goes back on? I did find a shop here in Tempe, AZ. In fact the guy was involved with the hinge design for the Bricklin.

stooze 01-24-2006 09:18 PM

Careful how?

Do they go out of adjustment? If so what should one do to help prevent that?

Paras 01-25-2006 12:11 AM

I've never heard anybody on these forums having a great experience with the vertical doors... Its always been, "they look great but the quality/fit is poor."

FRC2 01-25-2006 12:32 AM

I have never heard anything good about those doors...Seems like evryone just about has had a negative experince with them from the manufacturers service to the way they function. :ack:

More than likely it was from SpecterWerks. I had them on my FRC and they looked sweet especially with some HID lighting. Mine ran around $1500 on a group purchase a few years back. here is a link to the website: http://www.spectergtr.com/corvette/exterior.html
