The Grond Chronicles : The Bent Valve Cometh [Dialup, you know the script]
So I bent a valve last Saturday and began the tear down of my engine . Today, the Frozen Tundra was not as bad (low 50 deg), so I pulled the head to see if I punched a hole in my piston and to try find the smoking gun (what caused the dropped valve)
Well what I found was very interesting, but I will let the pictures speak for themselves. So the Harland Sharp Roller Rockers are 1.8:1 ratio and NOT 1.7:1 ratio as I was told when I bought them.
So they are up for sale. That ratio is way too much for the monster cam I currently have (234/240 598/608 114LSA) but they would net nice gains with a smaller cam or stock cam. |

One bent valve means one thing... but when they all are banging the pistons (and not banging in the Knooger way :) ) I can't make it out. So the Harland Sharp Roller Rockers are 1.8:1 ratio and NOT 1.7:1 ratio as I was told when I bought them. So they are up for sale. That ratio is way too much for the monster cam I currently have but they would net nice gains with a smaller cam or stock cam |

Wow!! That's a real shame. It blew me away seeing all the the intake valves hitting pistons. The first thing I thought of was valve timing. Which your explanation addresses. That's where you know a heck of a lot more about cams and rocker ratios and what it takes to make things work in unison. This is where I have to give it to you for doing these kind of mods and going for it. I am sure you'll get it all together before spring. Keep us posted as I know you will. Will you be keeping the same cam and change the rockers and I guess the heads? I guess my question is what's the next step from this point?

My first thought was bad valve timing too... as in the new sprocket had slipped, something else similar broke... something along that line... So did you check to see what sort of problem you may also now have with your valve guides?? How long did you run the "Grondmeister" with this problem? How old are these heads? It looks like enough carbon there to be originals...?? so I guess that's better than possibly messing up brand new heads too... :willy: Dang that stinks.... :ack: Maybe ask Bill if he'd be willing to buy a headless engine... Dang, Dang, Dang... :smash: |

Ouch.... looks like it "flycut the pistons" with the exhaust valves. Interesting, because normally you have P/V clearance issues with the intake valves...

But they measure at 1.8:1 ratio - which is fine if I had a stock or baby cam - but I don't :ack: So in case everyone missed it - the Harland Sharp 1.8:1 ratio was the "smoking gun". The HS were not harmed in any way (they seemed to be forged in a ICBM bunker or something :willy: ) and they are now up for sale. EG :cheers: <edit> the HS have been sold |
