Best way to rebuild 327?
 

Hi,
I'm bringing my engine in tomorrow to be rebuilt and need to know if anyone has any recommendations or ideas. I want a better cam, intake, carb and headers and want to know best ones to use. I need to let the guy know which stuff to order. Right now it is a 327/350HP. Should I leave it a 327 or bore it to 350? What are the advantages/disadvantages?

The 350 and 327 use the same 4" bore, but have a different stroke. There is no doubt that the 350 will make more torque, but a 327 is still a very good motor. You will want to build something that will work well with the rest of your drivetrain combination. What tranny and rear gears do you have now?

4-speed, and I believe gears are 3.36. It is a daily driver and occasional 1/4 mile car.

Sure, plenty.

Stroke to at least 350. Dynomax coated headers, duals, Performer 2101, Comp Cams 268H or XE262 min. for 4spd. if you drive hard. Rec. !

How much higher than 350 can I go? And what are the advant./disad. from 327? What about future resale value since it is original? And what carb? Car already has true duals, what did you mean? Any muffler recom?

You did not state yr., assumed 75. 327 is fine, likes to rev., 350 has more TQ. Stock carb. or Holley 600. Dynomax mufflers.

The 327 has it's own unique personality, kind of like the old time Z28 302:
It loves to rev!!! So with the right setup, (carb, intake, cam and heads ) you can make as much HP as a 350, but in a different fashion.
Bottom line: is what do you like the most?
I've had a 327 in a '68 Camaro, 4 speed, Performer RPM intake, headers and dual exhaust and still today with a 360HP 406" I miss that personality.
My next engine project is based on either a 302 or 327 aluminum SB, with TTs.
Drive it like you stole it :D

I don't know exactly the details on a 327 block, but if you use a 350 crank and have it bored the standard .030 oversize, you'd end up with a 355ci motor. There is nothing wrong with a 327, they rev fast and put out plenty of power. Your 327 probably has a forged crank, so it should be good and strong.
I don't know if you can put a 383 stroker crank or not in a 327, but on a 350 with a little block relief with a die grinder you can put in a specially modified SB 400 crank and get 383 ci out of it.
A good forged 383 (or 350) crank would probably be at least $400-$600.

Car is a '68, guess it's time to change my name. http://www.corvetteforum.cc/ubb/smile.gif What would you recommend for best 1/4 mile times? The carb in it now is a Holley but I was looking to change it to a better one since it isn't stock.

I also had a 327 from a '68 Camaro (put it in a '78 Camaro) w/ 3.42 gears, Holley 600, Edelbrock Intake, Headers...the usual stuff. I *Loved* that engine! Not enough emphasis can be placed on the "loves to rev" statement...that SOB would be @ 6500 RPM in a blink-of-an-eye. Really fun.
I had the TH350, but would love to have had the deeper first gear of your 4-sp. It may be outdated now, but I had a Crame cam (HMV-278-2) .467/.494 I/E lifts w/ 1.5 rockers, which was very responsive.

Keep it a 327 and :U on a FORD!

Where can I get the Dynomax headers, I tried Jet-hot and they said they cant them?

I say, stroke it to 383! Get a Scat cast steel crank, stock 5.7" rods and some Keith Black pistons. Those extra cubes are CHEAP power.
