LS2 oil pan on LS6> Pics

I have been threatening to do this for a year and finally did. As you guys in this forum know we all worry about losing oil pressure under lateral Gs and know folks who have lost engines as a result. If you look into a LS1/6 pan it is real shallow and wide thus the oil can wash to one side into the wing leaving nothing for the pickup. This is real obvious looking into the pan. GM is bragging about the C6 pan addressing this issue and it sure looks like it will. I bought one and mocked it up today and can see it should replace the LS1/6 wing pan no problem. The clearance to the cross member is fine and in fact the cradle is the same between C5/6
The LS2 pickup and "oil deflector" splash pan are the same as LS1/6 so all that is needed is the pan and dip stick. This is about $275 new(discounted).
This pan is sure going on the stroker when that happens.

the funny thing is, when the LS1 came out, GM bragged about how good that winged pan is. I'm still not convinced the "new" style pan is any better, and losing oil capacity bothers me a little too.

As I remember, the LS1 pan is baffled so that it still does a good job of retaining oil during cornering.

Anyway, who knows...... The grass is always greener.....

btw, here is a top shot from a Vette vs F-body pan. How is your new LS2 pan different from the F-body pan. You should be able to get one of those for next to nothing

Per the General:
"The LS2’s new oil pan was developed to ensure oil delivery commensurate with Corvette’s high-performance capability. Extensive track testing has shown the new design to provide better oil control under the extreme demands of high-rpm/high g-force driving maneuvers. The elimination of the previous “gull wing” oil pan design also reduces the engine’s oil capacity from 6.5 quarts to 5.5 quarts with a dry filter"

The baffles as configured in the C5 pan look to be a problem in that the oil is fairly shallow accross the wide pan and the passages to the wings are small. It looks to me that if you were in a sweeper you would load one wing and when you changed direction if would take some time for the oil to flow back.

Dave F, do they still reccomend overfilling on the C6? I looked at the Fbody and GTO pans and there is no way they will clear the crossmember.

I think they still recommend the extra oil.

I'm still not convinced....

^ I could have sworn that the over-fill recomendatoin was lifted w/ the C6... but I do not know. Will the oil get hotter w/ less capacity?

Bruce:

You do the swap already?

I will bet on one thing, I bet your oil temps with the new pan will go up vs the LS1/LS6 vette pan. Less cooling surface area to dissipate heat. If you are running an oil cooler probably will not see a difference.

See5, did you ever do the oil pan swap?

If so, can you tell us any info or results?

Thanks, Perry

Did the swap with no surprises. The crossmember had to drop ~6" to get it done but windage tray and pickup tube are same as LS1 and dip stick bolts to block unlike my old to header bracket. Fits perfect.
I run it with ~6 quarts as the the C6 manual recommends the 1 quart overfill for track use. This reads accurately on stick.
I sure feel better and looking at inside of LS1/6 it is no wonder it washes out. That pan is so wide and flat--I bet 2 quarts could hide in one of the wings under side load.

Cool

Can you point your camcorder at the oil pressure DIC reading and play it back later and see how well it works? Might be good for the T1 cars if it improves the oil pressure in corners. I am glad I have a dry (well, more like damp) sump in the LS7...
Good work, keep us informed on how well it works.

Interesting perspective but if you are right, I dont think it would be too significant. But I could be wrong.

I'd rather not subject the car to oil starvation though. I mean can we be secure with Oil starvation using an extra quart in an LS1/LS6 oil pan? Or do we run far less risk with LS2 OIL Pan?

With my harness bar and seat I would have to strap the camera to my chest--
I ran a track day in cool weather and it worked great. I ran ~6+ quarts which is the 5.5 fill plus about a quart. I can't comment on oil temp before or after but for me in WI and ~1/2 hour runs < 240. The pan is thicker al with a more textured finish.

just curious - how much is the LS2 Pan? Or was that the $275 you put in your post?

see5 05-09-2006 09:39 PM

I paid $275 with stick, tube, pickup and splash pan. The stick and tube seem same read length as my 2000 and the pickup and splash pan are same part # as LS1/6. My deal was not that special so you can probably do as well.
