At how many 32nds should you get new tires?

I was getting a nail fixed the other day, and made the comment about how I have 6/32 left, and think I can get maybe another 10K before it hits 2/32. The tire guy said, "well, I would HOPE you'd be replacing them WAY before THAT!!"

So what do you think? is 2/32 too little tread, or did he just want to sell me $450 tires a little bit sooner?

I generally like to replace them about a week before they hit 0/32nds but sometimes I wait a little longer. :D Actually, as long as your not having problems in the rain you have plenty of tread.

The correct time to replace tires is governed by your budget and willingness to drive on bald tires. For example, In college I had no money so I felt it was totally acceptable to drive until I saw a hint of cord, but now I have money and am thinking of geeting new tires when I still have significant tread left.

Anyway, a long and not very specific answer to a specific question.

Just drive it until you feel like getting new tires

Basically, the less tread you have, the worse wet traction you have. If you don't see much rain, then you're fine as long as there are no imperfections, bubbles, or cords showing on your tires.

Agree with the above. It's a matter of how much rain you drive in. My street tires are almost down to the bars, but I've been driving on them that way for a while. However, as we get closer to the rainy season I can going to replace them for safety's sake. Hydroplaning is not fun!

I have bald rear p-zeros and was going around a 90 degree corner wed. and the back started to drift and I probably over corrected or whatever but I spun out over a median kissing up the rocker panel and putting a bulg in one of the front tires. I thought the car would be trashed but all I had was massive scraping of the rocker panel( about a half inch up the side). Sucks but I consider myself lucky!! Get new tires or take it real easy in the rain. By the way I was going about 20 or 25 which was too fast for that turn(wouldn't have been on decent tires.

I've always heard 3/32 minimum, but like everyone else I use 'em up. :D

I've heard 2/32nds is the legal minimum...Runflats seem to lose traction at 8/32nds... :cuss

Look around the shoulder area of the tire on the sidewall there should be small arrows pointing to the tread area.Follow these arrows onto the tread, that is where the tread wear indicators are built into the tire. When the tire is worn down to the tread wear indicators according to the tire makers and the Ohio State Patrol its time for new tires.
