Reverse Lock-Out...Yes or No

Title says it all.

I have gone too far over to the right and got a grind......thought there was a lockout?

Sorry...not sure...never ran into that issue. I don't think there is though actually.

There should be a solenoid that stops you from going into Reverse at speed...same idea as the solenoid that forces skip shift...at least that was my understanding. Perhaps one of these guys that actually knows what they are talking about can speak up. I'll shut up now. :)

Yes there is a lockout gate but it can be overpowered. As I recall it is simply a solenoid. Here is an excerpt from my manual.

Your six-speed manual transmission has a feature that
allows you to safely shift into REVERSE (R) while the
vehicle is rolling (at less than 5 mph (8 km/h)). You
will be locked out if you try to shift into REVERSE (R)
while your vehicle is moving faster than 5 mph
(8 km/h). If you have turned your ignition off and
wish to park your car in REVERSE (R), you will have
to move the shift lever quickly to the right, and
immediately forward into gear.

There is a lock out, you should not be able to put your stick in reverse while driving. I had the same problem. My car is still under warranty so I took it to the dealer. They did not believe me and they are a very covette friendly dealer. So I took the shop foreman for a ride, he was saying he had never heard of such a problem and I quickly demonstrated the problem. They pulled out the console and droped in a new part, not a big deal.

I found this problem gets worse with time. Suggest you get it looked at. :yesnod: Good luck!

Yes there is a lock out for reverse. I noticed that I cought a bit of the reverse slot when going to 5th. I quit using 5th for a couple of months until I figured out the problem. I just went 4th to 6th. It is a total pain to replace. I had mine done under warrenty. The mechanic had a long socket that just fit in between the top of the tranny and the bottome of the car. He said he could only get small turns on the rachet but it came out and the new one in. I have had no trouble since then.
