Electronic climate control - Dim-to-no visability

All:

My 2000 C5's electronic climate control display began to dim and finally pretty much gave it up. I'm sure this had been discussed here, my thread searches were ineffective, though.

In the dark of night you can still see it, and everything works fine...

Any ideas beyond replacement?

Thanks!

there is a guy on ebay (I think he lives in Boston) who rebuilds the VFD (vacuum flourescent display) for a reasonable price. I cannot remember how to get in touch, since he rebuilt mine more than a year ago, but maybe someone else will chime in.

Well.....

99 times out of 100.... you just remove it... hit all the solder joints with a gun, and it is as good as new... seems they just have bad solder joints..... Try it... it is easy to remove and replace.

Thanks guys...

Athomesoda - is there a thread on removing it? I'm very handy always like to check for guidance first...

Hmmmm.........................
your thread searches were ineffective, but It took me about 5sec to find this using the forum search.:toetap:

I searched "climate control" and this thread was on page 3.;)

I really did try! I was stuck on "electronic" - should have used "climate control". Anyway, thanks for the boost.

anytime!
I hope it helps.

I soldered mine and it's been working like new ever since.

Glad to hear it.

Those are the best instructions I've seen in a forum - very clear, with pictures and numbered tags! I hang around Cadillac, Hot Boat, and Jet Ski sites a lot and do a lot fo repair keeping my old stuff running and my new stuff running better.

I'll give the fix a try...

Thanks!
:)

FYI, soldered mine 2 nights ago and it's fixed, however, on my 2001 the internals are different than the one pictured in the above link. You will still see the 8 rectangulat resistors, just in a different location. Mine were lined up in two rows next to each other. Hit these 8 if yours is different than the picture in the link.

Yep, I did the resoldering process on mine and it works great! Pretty quick and simple really.

Good luck!

Dave
