whine in the rear between 88 and 92 mph
 

..and no it's not my mother-in-law. I took my '01 Z06 across Alligator Alley the other day and I noticed that when I accelerated from 88 mph to 92 there was a whine in the rear. Once I took it up over 100 the noise went away. Wondering if anyone had any ideas if this is normal? Also had a bad rattle in the rear driver's side near the exhaust. This went away when the car warmed up. Is this a heat shield or something that needs to be tightened?

In this narrow speed range it is more likely to be pavement variation than anything else. I've heard stories of whistles and squeeks in the Z06, but no rattles. The whine in a Z06 is often the driver, present company excepted, on the internet. jerboa http://www.corvetteforum.cc/ubb/smile.gif

Actually-I tried this on numerous occasions and kept getting this sound out of the exhaust in this narrow speed range. Maybe I should take this service tech out on a test drive at this speed. :lol:

What gear were you in? Did you try it in different gears? If so did it still occur when you were in another gear?

Try different gears and also try taking it out of gear when you hear it. That way you can help identify where the problem is. Also look to see what RPM the car is at when it occurs.

never seen speeds beyond that YET!
nor have I ever experienced these so called whines?

C3's and 4's typically had a bit of differential whine at certain speeds, due to the mounting of that member directly to the car (frame). It's generally caused by a bit of ring and pinion misalignment that would not be noticeable (noise-wise) on a solid rear axle car.

I gather that the C5 uses a similar mounting arrangement, albeit with the transmission piggybacked in front.

The noise should be the same at a certain speed, regardless of transmission gear. However, letting off the gas or pushing in the clutch may change or eliminate the noise. If it disappears with a change in gear but at the same speed, then the tranny may have problems.

Bottom line, tranny aside, nothing to worry about -- Vette owners have been living with it since 1963. Even more important, most mechanics (including GM) have no idea how to set up a rear end, so letting your local dealer work on it is likely to be a ulcer-inducing exercise. Turn up the stereo, or step on the gas... slowing down is not an option, right? http://www.corvetteforum.cc/ubb/smile.gif

GM Engineering informed me at Carlisle this year,if a Z06 owner elects to run his new Z06 hard under the first 500 miles,he PROMISED me,a whine WOULD develop in the rear-end!! He went ahead and continued to say,it was okay to get up to high speeds,BUT,get their gradually!! Taking care of your speeds prior to the 500 mile range,he said,accomodates the gears meshing together in the rear-end,thus,eliminating the whine.

Curious....did you break your Z06 in,as the Manual suggested? I just went over the 500 mile mark with mine this past week-end,babied it to that point,then Sunday,driving back from Zanesville,Ohio got up to some "high" speeds<G>,and didn't experience a whining of any nature !

What does the exhaust rattle sound like? Is it "tink, tink, tink tink" when you let off?
