84 Hood supports
I don't think our 84 hood should be so hard to open and suspect that the two gas charged struts are bad. I was told that they are no longer made and that someone makes a long gas charged strut that replaces the scissors strut.
Anybody know more about these and where to get them? Thanks, fitz |
Re: 84 Hood supports (Mr. Fitz)
Don't think there are any gas charged struts on the hood of an 84. They are on the rear hatch. All C4 hoods are heavy and hard to lift if you are inexperienced at it. The 85 and later cars have a different hood support, but it does not help lift the hood. Just a note, don't drop the hood to close it with the doors open on your car, it can damage the hood and the doors.

Re: 84 Hood supports (Mr. Fitz)
I broke the "scissors strut" on my 85. The scissors type is no longer available and now GM supplies a long gas strut as the replacement. I conveniently mounted it on the drivers’ side this time. It seemed expensive for what I got.
I unfortunately had to remove my two small gas struts up front to fit the intercooler, but it was worth the extra effort. |
Re: 84 Hood supports (Mr. Fitz)
I think the part number for the long gas strut to replace the scissor type was:12525136.

Re: 84 Hood supports (W4ZG)
I got them from the GM dealer and put on my 94. I think it made a difference...still have the large tube also.
