Early '63 J56 "banded" brake drums, info?

Yes, this quest is reminiscent of the proverbial "looking for a needle in a haystack". But, with all of the knowledgable people & parts collectors on this site, it's worth a try :)

If anyone is willing to part with a set of the first generation(?) "banded" J56 brake drums, or info, please PM me. Drums in usable condition & within recommended diameter specs would be nice - but at this point in time ALL possibilities (worn out drums, singles, tips/leads, blueprints, etc) would be helpful! Production J56 drums available as partial trade - if so desired. Thank you!

Technically, J-56 did not exist until 1964. The "HD Brakes" with finned drums were part of the Z-06 package in 1963 and became J-56 when all the Z-06 equipment was unbundled for 1964, There was also a J-65 Metallic Brake option in both '63 and '64. The front drum castings are different because they have a slightly thicker web. Rear drum castings are the same as base, but both front and rear and drums have a finer finish machined on the friction surface. J-65 also has different return springs.

By "banded" do you mean the anti-squeak springs around the outside of the drum. Many believe these were only on front drums. I'm not sure.

The J-65 knowledge base is sketchy because there are no detectable visual differences unless wheels and drums are removed, but this is not done during NCRS judging, and the situation is further confused because the '63-'64 NCRS JG confuses J-56 with J-65 in several instances.

Duke - thank you for the prompt reply & clarification. I defer to your expertise as to the proper GM terminology. I thought (perhaps erroneously) that forum members might recognize the term "J56" more quickly as the finned Z06 brake drums than the term "HD".

Using Duke's (correct) description: I'm looking for what I believe to be very early 1963 Z06 "banded" HD brake drums/info. Part#3833066(?). These drums appear similar to the 1963 Z06 HD finned drums w/ the exception of having an 1/8 inch thick steel band tack welded onto the perimeter inboard edge of the fins. (Not sintered met brake drums or the type w/ a perimeter spring.) Thanks for any help!

Ianrand, I assume that you have checked with the Nabers Brothers? Not to hijack your thread, but I am still looking for an original (not NOS) Z06 master cylinder:thumbs:
