Pics of engine bearing after 50 trackdays and 80k miles

This motor had a problem when some dumbass (me) missed a downshift at the track=overrev. :willy: :leaving:

Bent the valves of course.

01 Z06 I owned this car for about 4 years 72k miles. Did approx 35 trackdays. I never had an oil cooler, oil temps were over 300° more then a few times. I sold the car last sept. to a good friend of mine. He knew the exact history of the car when he bought it. He had bought and continued to run it on the track and at times, he would let me "put in a few laps" at the track. He installed an oil cooler and some other track goodies. The car had at least 15 more trackdays before the over-rev.

So with 50 trackdays and 80k miles this is what the bearings looked like:

Heck, those are barely a flesh wound! Makes me wonder what my bearings look like though....

The real question is "What do the crankshaft journals look like ?" If they are in good shape the rebuild will be a lot less expensive.

Hot??? They look like they were passed on a grinder then thrown into a smelter! :D

Was that engine still running when torn down?

Red Gump 09-07-2006 10:41 AM

Hehehe.....See Jeff, you know how she drives:D
No that engine was......how do you say it..........locked up tighter than a  But it was fun to take apart. Never seen mains get that hot before, maybe just a tad of oil starvation :yesnod:

Bryan

Thanx for posting pics, Those are out of what is now my car , I LOVE IT. have rebuilt the engine along with some upgrades along the way, The journal were very good, Did all the right machine work .

Have now put 2k miles on the new engine, Awesome results from the rebuild
.

463 rwhp / 421 tq , revs instantly to over 6200rpm

Can't wait to get her back on track and yes Bryan will be driving also and probably have as big a grin as i have putting the first 2k miles on the new engine.

Glen,
Glad to see you are back on track. Sounds like you learned a lot working on that motor! Come out to Roelbling at the end of the month and show us what you've got!

What were the regular oil intervals?

Mobil 1 was used throughout the 80k ?

Any oil analysis reports?

Glen, Again I want to say thanks for all you have done for me.

As some of you may remember I was the one who "pushed" mobil 1 5w-30 to the limit. I was told by some here that the oil analysis's that I posted here did not mean much as I could not see the wear on the bearings.

Here are a few of the reports:

54k miles on the car, 3 trackdays and 4400 on the oil

62k on the car, 7700 miles on the oil and 2 trackdays

Last year in April at Sebring, the oil temp was hitting 300°+ in 20 mins. I would do a cool-down lap to get it below 280° and do a few more laps before the end of the session. I was running mobil 1 0w-40 and here is the link to that report 5200 miles on oil and 67k on the car

At VIR in july of '05 I ran M1 0w-40 again. Temps 300°+ in 20 mins again. I was getting worried about the oil holding up due to the fact that my oil pressure was getting below 25psi at idle when the temp was over 300°. I would check this by coasting down the backstraight at VIR or Sebring when doing a cooldown lap. So I changed the oil to Motul 15w-40 @ $9 a quart from one of the vendors at the event. The temps still got over 300°, the idle pressure was a little higher at 26psi. That was the only time that I ran an oil different from M1. I changed out the motul approx 2k miles later, as the motul rep told me that the oil is not a "long term" oil like M1, ect.

IMO the best oil for these cars on the track would be redline 5w-30. It has the highest HTHS rating of any 5w-30. I don't think you are gonna hurt anything with M1 or amsoil either. IMO my results prove that M1 will hold up.

I think the heavier oils add to the higher running temps, as the motor has to work harder which creates more heat and friction.

gpm30236 09-10-2006 12:19 AM

After i bought the car i put redline , changed regularly , also added an oil cooler. , planning to use redline again.
