dry sump for C-5?

I've been hearing about a pressurized oil aux. tank to send oil to pump when oil pressure drops in hard cornering. Thinking about going with a dry sump install before I install new engine in next week? Where can I get one and who has the best price for a set up? The car is a dedicated track car.

Not a dry sump, but an Accusump. Dry sumps scavenge oil out of the engine, an accusump is just a pressure accumulator that maintains oil pressure (to a point) when the engine oil pump loses pressure for some reason.

Au N Egl (I think) has one installed with some nice photos.

HTH, and have a good one,
Mike

Try Moroso Performance products. They have several accumulators. At about $ 200. They also make dry and wet sump systems .

Thanks for info, I'm sorry, I should have made myself clearer, I really don't want an accumalator, I'm thinking a dry sump similar to LS 7 motors, with the remote oil pump. As long as I have neither one at this time, why not just go to remote system?

Is your engine set up for a dry sump now?

97coupechuck 10-04-2006 03:02 PM

No, it's not set up for dry sump, not sure all that's needed. Just talked to Ligenfelter, they say about $3,800 gets all parts but hoses etc. A lot higher than I thought it might be. If I can't find a more resonable price I'll look into an accumalator system. I blew an engine, main bearing, for no apparent reason other than the possible low oil presure problem asociated with tracking the car. Don't want to go thru this cost again!

Here is something that may help

I just ordered the Corvette dry sump pan from www.drysump.com and I need to make sure I get this thing set up correctly.

First I am using a three stage Barnes Pump (2 scavenge 1 pressure) which I will be driving with gilmer drive pulleys and belt. My car will be street driven and I want to be comfortable that at idle, the pump will be turning fast enough to keep enough oil pressure in the engine. The only other belt driven accessory will be the alternator.

You can specify a 28 or 32 tooth pulley with the pump, so I would think the 28 tooth would be better as it would turn the pump faster. I don't know what crank pulley sizes are available.

Is there a dry sump setup for the C5 that doesn't require AC delete??

I guess or know a good dry sump is better but way more bucks and work. DRM has a kit which has worked well on my car the past 4 + years after blowing up one motor from oil starvation. The car is also a lot faster now so it would have never survived without it.

97coupechuck 10-04-2006 07:50 PM

Thanks for the help. Looks like it'll be an accumalator system, I like DRM, I'll give them a call in morning.

Here is a drysump that I am going to look in to.

It is the 4th pan from the left.

The ARE system is a very nice setup but it is not something you are going to install in a few hours or even days if done properly

As far as I know a moroso (and almost every other) accusump can only be mounted vertically.
Only the Canton can mount in any position

A dry sump is a major project, I'd say that was the turning point of when my race car became "out of hand"

They are a major whore to change the oil on, a major whore to pull the motor after installation, (used to take an hour)

It takes much more then a 3 stage pump to create enough negative crank case pressure to build HP which is a major advantage of a dry sump system, but an unrealized advantage w a 3 stage system

You could buy all the parts on ebay for 1/2 of retail but they are a major expense to install. We used over 30 _AN fittings and had to order close to 50 to have enough supply of different angles on hand to get the job done. You just don't know until you are actually putting it together how it will really fit.

You will loose your passenger seat, you must put a box around the sump if in the passenger compartment to be SCCA/NASA legal, (one of those "squirting hot oil around the cabin issues"), you need to air duct that box to get the heat out of the cabin.

A 3 gallon tank should only run half full so you don't have much more oil in the system to keep everything cooler, just the added volume of what's in the lines.

The key advantage for the average guy is oil control, especially in the face of bad oil control in the LSx motors but it is a huge can of worms to open.

Since we did it on a C4, in a future C4 I would run an accusump, a canton road race pan and a melling Low vol oil pump.

tough call on a C5

The Moroso can mount horizontally or vertically. No problem.

i have the 3 stage system in my car,,worked well for about a year then we have started having issues.the pressure is going away for unknown reasons..the car is back at drm now randy and doug will figure it out..holds 11 quarts and was installed in the battery box location, moved the battery to the back..
remember as you make this decision it adds weight and isn't a cheap deal either..
i lost 2 engines with the wet sump system,,C5R blocks,,so i went to the dry sump in desperation...'course i think i can break an anvil with a rubber mallet..

Johnny it just the high speeds that you slide though corners ;)
