Never Been Hit!! But used for towing.

What do think this car was used for to tow? :ack: Forget it! I don't even what to know the history. http://www.usedcorvettesforsale.com/...tte-16606.html
You'd think he'd at least remove the tow hitch.

If I had a small fishing boat I'd be drilling holes in my bumpers for the hitch right now.

Hey that looks like a fixable Vette to me!!

When my Dad bought his 66 (now my 66 :D) in 1967 it had a trailer hitch. The guy that owned it previously had a small sailboat he trailered. The hitch stayed on until I started the frame off this Summer.

Mine also had a hitch when I bought it. Since the bumpers needed re-chroming, I simply took those bumpers off and stored them with the hitch. I'd have no concerns towing something with mine if that suited what I wanted to do!

MY 67 was also purchased with a hitch. Now I have two unwanted holes in my bumpers. The funny thing was the guy I bought the car from decided to replace the old bumpers with new and drill holes in the new bumpers as will. I have two sets with holes in them for a hitch.

I know this picture doesn't have the best quality (needed to use up a couple of pictures on a cheap disposable camera), but this is the little trailer I tow behind my 56.
No problems on the interstate at 70-80mph.

Whoops, sorry, that was supposed to be front and back above.

It still has the original California black/yellow plates  a good sign.

My Great Uncle bought a 1963 vert (brand new while he was in the service) and used it to tow a 25+/- foot fishing boat. Even drove it cross country (MD to NM) with the boat attached. Seemed to be relatively common back in the day.

Not a very good picture, but I use mine for towing my classic Cushman Scooter to the various shows/scooter club meets!!

And, with the right hitch, no holes in the bumpers are necessary. This hitch mounts with the existing bumper mount bolts at the rear, the front mounts to the differential. The pullbar is hinged to allow it to drop by removal of the pin which you can see just below the hitch ball, so easy access to the spare tire carrier is afforded. I've used this one for many years, really like it.

By the way, I've considered getting one of the teardrop camping trailers myself, have looked at the Microlite T@B trailers (www.tab-rv.com), but am also wondering what brands are the ones you guys are pulling?

I believe it was more common in the day. I used to tow a ski boat with my '63 340hp with 4:11 gears back in the late '60's using the same hitch shown on my car above. Gas mileage wasn't that great, even without the boat, but who cared back then? With the 4:11's and air shocks on the rear, that rig would climb a wall!!

My mom and dad (age 83) towed their bike trailer and motorcycle with their '56 Vette. Dad put the hitch on the rear crossmember. Pulled great. Undetectable when removed.

John:
That's a fine hammer you've got there.

Just goes to show . . . these cars were meant for driving!

Coves4me 10-10-2006 11:31 AM

Those trailers are soooooooooo cooooooool!!!!

Makes me want to find a trailer and just drive around town with it.

drd1vette 10-10-2006 12:08 PM

Funny, he's in PA but the car has CA black plates. Cool, By the way, I bought a hitch last year to tow spare tires toolbox, for autocrossing. My hitch bolted under the frame and rearend.
Cheers!
