[Pop Quiz] What's the biggest aerodynamic feature on our cars?

Year doesn't matter.

injuner 10-26-2006 03:28 PM

Heh, the body? :)

69autoXr 10-26-2006 03:59 PM

Can you clarify the question a little bit?

Do you mean what causes the most drag (tires perhaps)...or what body feature improves aero flow the most (certainly year or at least gen-specific here).

flat underside.

the only aerodynamic device is the spoiler underneath that causes air to cool the car. Doesn't help with drag or downforce, but keeps the car from overheating.

Even the new Z06 doesn't have any true aerodynamic benefit, since the nose has an open bottom.

VetteDrmr 10-26-2006 05:38 PM

Open windows?

ghoffman 10-26-2006 07:05 PM

The tires?

Windshield?
<---- Or my head?

Ok Brian,

I am out of ideas. Requiring minds need to know.

Side vents?

Randy@DRM 10-26-2006 08:35 PM

Kinda flat hood, or rear trunk lid. The radiator deal, which isn't good at all on the new cars.

I don't know what you are asking,
Randy

The flat vertical rear end helped aerodynamics on the C5 and C6...don't know if this is the biggest feature, though.

It's the roof.

All the other stuff, spoilers etc, are there to make up for the lift generated by the it. Think about the profile of the car, reletively flat on the bottom, with a smooth curved roof that reduced drag, but when you look at the profile it's a WING! Take a look at the smoke trail in the picture. Early prototype cars actually generated so much lift you could turn the wheels lock to lock and not cause any change of direction. Which is also why later prototypes were open cockpit cars, they generate higher drag, but they make more downforce. Convertables are worse, until you cut the windshield down, like on the GrandSport. It also promoted other speedsters as well.

The Shark cars fought this with a rear window that popped out. The air entered through the back and exited through the windows.

I put some vents in the hood. Also took out the fascia in the side vents, letting out alot of heat. Also put a little wing across the back. Picked up 15 MPH on the front straight at VIR with no twitchiness.
