The Grond Chronicles : Reincarnation Part 8 [Dialup; Dante's Inferno]
As always, full details of The Grond Chronicles are at Grond TV
Background and Cliff Notes : Shattered Hammer, soon to be Reforged… Part 1 of The Grond Chronicles : The Reincarnation, dealt with stripping the body panels and removing the entire drivetrain and engine. Details are here Part 2 documented the complete engine teardown and looked like a scene out of Chernobyl. Details are here http://grond.tv/stjudelogo.jpg I then auctioned off 2 of my melted pistons to benefit St. Jude Childrens Hospital on the Corvette Forum. That auction raised $2400 for the sick kids - here Part 3 covered the interior demolition. Details are here Along the way, I bought a JL Audio 18inch subwoofer . And a few amplifiers… :D Part 4 documented how to install 4.5inch tubs on a C5 Coupe and a weld-in custom 6 point chrome moly roll cage (cage courtesy of Cajundude). Details are here At the end of Part 4, I bought a brand new bare LS2 block - here Part 5 covered the build of the custom fibreglass enclosure for the mega subwoofer, false floor, the very beginnings of the amp racks, and targa top storage. Details are here During Part 5, I became a Corvette Forum Supporting Tuner - here Part 6 detailed the installation of a ratchet shifter connected to a 4L60E transaxle transmission. This was a C5 first!. Details here At the end of Part 6. I held my first annual Madness Mod Party – details are here with all the pictures here Part 7, demonstrated the installation of shaved door handles. This mod was performed by the Mod Meister, GB Vette, who travelled all the way from Virginia to install this mod for me. Thanks Gary!!!! Details are here After Part 7, I went to PRI and got even more radical ideas - details are here Part 8, that you are reading now, will detail the main event; the ground-up build of my Madness Monster Motor. Parts 9, 10, 11, 12 etc. I will reveal as time goes on. This project will stretch for several more months – at least until April 2007. The goal is to be ready for Cruise In VIII. So please pull up a chair, open a cold one and get comfy. EG

I am trying to keep it to 1 thread per major modification from start to finish. Unfortunately it never quite works out that way and always goes way off topic all the time. Even so, I don't want to break them up into dozens of tiny threads as it will make it too hard to have continuity with each major mod. So please set your "View" settings at 100 posts per page. Problem solved :yesnod: "Edit Options" http://forums.corvetteforum.com/prof...do=editoptions http://grond.tv/cfoptions.jpg http://grondpix.com/reincarnation/re...tion34 - 1.jpg So now that I have openly and publicly admitted I have a modding problem, and that I obviously have serious “issues”, let’s move on to my latest mod. Some background information : this engine build, unlike all that have seen before, will be built from a new bare GM LS2 block all the way to a running engine. Why start with a bare block? Because everyone else buys a shortblock, bolts on some heads and then says, “I built my engine”. This build should be interesting because you will get to see, for the first time, what it really takes to build a high performance, high RPM, big cube stroker engine. At the end of this build, you will understand why Tuners charge around $20,000 for a 1000hp, bulletproof, supercharged engine. Speed is not cheap. The goals of this engine are simple; circa 800rwhp all day long in the Florida sun, road race for hours at a time, idle happily in traffic, drive 1500 miles cross country anytime and cruise to the grocery on a lazy Sunday afternoon. Oh yes, and it must have a very loud, nasty idle and scream like a banshee to 7500rpm :D Will I achieve my goals? Well, let’s see…. We start with a completely bare LS2 block with not even water plugs or dowels.. http://grondpix.com/reincarnation/re...tion35 - 1.jpg http://grondpix.com/reincarnation/re...tion35 - 2.jpg 4.000 inch bore http://grondpix.com/reincarnation/re...tion35 - 3.jpg As I described here – the LS2 block is quite different from the LS1/LS6 block http://grondpix.com/reincarnation/re...tion35 - 4.jpg New bare block with not even water or oil plug – everything must be bought new and installed. http://grondpix.com/reincarnation/re...tion35 - 5.jpg Brand new LQ9 heads, Lunati full race hydraulic lifters, and Godzilla cam… http://grondpix.com/reincarnation/re...tion35 - 6.jpg 242/248 610/615 on a 114LSA ... Should have a “bone stock” idle…. NOT!!! http://grondpix.com/reincarnation/re...tion35 - 7.jpg Eagle forged crankshaft – 4.000 inch stroke. Rock solid high horsepower crank… But I really wanted a Callies forged crank – sadly, it was $1000 more than my budget allowed… http://grondpix.com/reincarnation/re...tion35 - 8.jpg 4.000 inch stroke + 4.000 inch bore = 402 cubic inches. Or 6.6 liters http://grondpix.com/reincarnation/re...tion35 - 9.jpg Since this is a supercharged application… http://grondpix.com/reincarnation/re...ion35 - 10.jpg let’s begin by pinning the crank… http://grondpix.com/reincarnation/re...ion35 - 11.jpg Unfortunately, the Eagle crank (unlike more expensive Callies or Lunati cranks) does not come keyed all the way to the snout http://grondpix.com/reincarnation/re...ion35 - 12.jpg Drilled and reamed. Ready for the pin. http://grondpix.com/reincarnation/re...ion35 - 13.jpg So I cut back a bit on the crank, but definitely not on the rods.. Lunati Pro Mod forged Rods http://grondpix.com/reincarnation/re...ion35 - 14.jpg Possibly the most important component in any application is max. strength rods http://grondpix.com/reincarnation/re...ion35 - 15.jpg One of the reasons not to buy Scat or other low budget rods is this.. http://grondpix.com/reincarnation/re...ion35 - 16.jpg Each rod is perfectly balanced from the factory http://grondpix.com/reincarnation/re...ion35 - 17.jpg And comes complete with a special lubricant and ARP bolts. http://grondpix.com/reincarnation/re...ion35 - 18.jpg To be continued…. |
Ooooooh, this is gonna' be GOOD!!!!:yesnod: :yesnod: :yesnod:
