94 Xmas present with 6spd tranny issue
 

My wife bought me a 94 for Christmas. (woo hooooo!!) It is in great shape however when releasing the clutch from a stand still the whole back of the car seems to shutter… a lot. Also when sometimes when downshifting. The car appears a stock 94 with no mods I can see, and 140k on the odometer unfortunately I have no idea if this is the original tranny.

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

I’d say check the easy things first.

Verify about 35psi in the tires.

Lift the rear of the car one wheel at a time. With the wheel in the air grab the top and bottom of the wheel and push with one hand and pull with the other. Move your hands from 12 and 6 o’clock to 1 and 7 and so on. The wheel should not move at all. Remove the wheel and visually inspect the rear suspension. Pay close attention to the trailing arms’ bushings. Grab everything back there and try to shake it. Remember to torque the lug nuts to 100 foot-pounds and in the correct star pattern when reinstalling the wheels.

Verify that with the parking brake off the wheels turn freely.

Do some S-turns at low speed trans in neutral but as quickly as you can turn the wheel lock to lock with the windows down. Listen for anything unusual.

In 1st gear get the car to 10MPH shift to 4th gear then accelerate to full throttle. The clutch should not slip and engine should slowly build RPMs.

I would suspect a bearing, U-joint, half shaft, missing or damaged bushing, wheel installed by a goober with an air gun, gearbox not secured to crossmember, failed motor mount or a differential with no oil before I would suspect the tranny based upon what you’re describing.

BTW congrats on the ’94 MN6 !!! After this initial hiccup you’ll love it :)

that shimmy could also mean a weak clutch... not so much weak, but just worn.

I would follow the advise above and eliminate the easy stuff first.

i dont think its the clutch itself i think im just qiuck to blame the tranny. the whole car mostely the rear shakes alot when releasing the clutch while at a stand still if im rolling even a little bit it doesn't really do it.

Replace the clutch and flywheel.

Ditto. Sounds like heat cracks and glazing. On one of my go fast firebirds I had a RAM ceramic 6 pedal clutch that did the same thing.
