What are the specs on the GM 151 cam?

What are the specs on the GM 151 cam? I have the stock L82 cam out while I do several projects. It looks good, but I will replace it since it is over 30 and I have it out. I want good low end and vacuum to operate the car as it is now. With the Turbo 400 and 3:36s my RPMs are 3200-3400 at hwy cruise with stock aluminum wheels. I really dont think I need a 5000-6000 rpm cam. A good low end bump will be fine I just dont want to go backwards from what I have

222 222 duration at .050 lift
306 306 advertized duration
.447” .447” lift
110/118

a good cam choice for what you want to do

Ganey 04-10-2007 10:26 AM

151 222/222 @ .050 .447/.447 114 Ls

L-82 224/224 @ .050 .450/.460 114 Ls

A Crane Energizer 272H offers slightly higher lift and shorter duration than the GM 151; but a shorter Lobe separation angle of 110. 216@.050 and .454/.454 max lift with 1.5R rockers. I run this in my rebuilt L48 and it is very responsive.

You may also consider a recurve of your ignition timing... THAT will show the greatest improvement (if you haven't done it already) over the cam you are considering as the GM 151 cam is nearly identical to what you are running stock. Rebuild/Tune carb, free-flowing exhaust and you are off to the races!

Thanks for the info. curious as to why not buy a new L82 (962) cam since so close to the 151?

A cam with shorter intake duration will make the car more responsive on street ... something like TedH's crane suggestion ... or a $70 cam&lifter kit from Summit like K1103.

25+ years-ago, a buddy and I both built-up our Z28 Camaros from stock (my '79, his '81 ), and we used 'similar' camshafts:
he used the Chevrolet "151 cam, while I used the SUMMIT 'house'-brand (I believe General Kinetics ground them? ), with .450"-lift and 218* @ .050"-lift diration, and while transmission, rear-gearing, cylinder heads and intake were the same (I used a Holley 650 double-pump, he used his Q-Jet ), my car usually out-ran him by .05 to .10-seconds at the strip, and got the same MPG figures, too.

Does General Kinetics still prvide SUMMIT with camshafts?

I think Crane makes the summit cams. I put a summit 214/224 cam into a 75 Camaro I had back in 1990. Engine is still running strong today!

three gears, 3.36 torque is the ticket go less duration.

:iagree: Have one in my vette; cheapo 350 GM crate with Trickflow heads, headers and 600 carb; good off the line and good mid range torq; peters out about 5000-5500 rpm's but all and all a good street cam
