Radio fuse- 10 amp has a 20 gauge yellow wire to the radio
From the radio-18 g. yellow to the antenna relay
From relay-18 g. gray to antenna motor (up)
From relay- 18 g. white to antenna motor (down)
From relay- 18 g. dark green
From relay- 18 g. black to ground on left hinge pillar
To relay- 18 g. orange (hot) from 20 amp clk/ltr/ant fuse

If the radio has been changed over the years----?????
Who knows.

Keep in mine the relay switches the way power is applied to the antenna.
For up: Green is (+), Gray is (-).
For down: Green is (-), White is (+).

I recently switched to a newer style GM antenna. more reliable and the relays are incorperated in the antenna assembly. Simple 3 wire setup. Ground, Power (always hot), and switched (low amp) hot from radio.

Where is the ant. relay located on an 81?

Wuttin 05-09-2007 09:32 AM

This should help...

Two wires come from the fuse box/radio to a relay located under the armrest (orange = constant power, yellow = routed through radio to provide power when radio is switched on).

Three wires go from the relay to the power antenna (green = power, white & gray are switched by the relay for up or down as decribed above).

One wire (black) goes from the relay to ground

The relay is set up for plug in type connectors that group the wires. If you don't have this stuff you'll have to either start over or adapt your system. As stated it's likely that your antenna is not OEM since the original unit requires the relay to work. Do some searching for more details...this has been discussed a bunch of times in the recent past.

Best of luck,
Steve

do i need to remove the relay so my new nonoriginal 3 wire will work? as now using the original wires from my old antenna my new antenna will go up but not down???????

tellcom2001 05-12-2007 08:17 PM

found it had to remove the relay under arm rest..thanks for the help..save the wave

How do I get access to the relay under the armrest? I found the plug coming from the antenna in the back corner. It was plugged to nothing. I applied power and the antenna goes both up and down. Where does the antenna lead plug into. Does it go to a relay looking thing that is on the back side of the rear door jamb? Several cut wires here plus some with single quick connect type female fittings.
