Another LS1 swap thread (pics)

Alright, I finally had some time to get started on my race car. Damn season started a month ago and have been slammed.

Project was starting out as a LS1 with a ZF6, but McLeod let me down on a custom bellhousing. So I swapped over to a T56 using a Mcleod SFI bellhousing for racing.

Yesterday started out pretty good, got the motor mounted and mocked up the transmission to get the tunnel cut. Today I'm modifying the trans for the bracket. I'm severely disappointed in the bracket and will be making my own. I plan on having the driveline for final mock up today.

Awesome, do you have the PNs and price on the bellhousing/parts needed for it? Im afraid of using the stock one with my power level.

-Does it look physically bigger than the stocker as mine "just" fits in the tunnel.

Kickass! Lookin' good, buddy! Glad you finally got some time to work on it!

excessive81 05-29-2007 05:45 PM

am man after my own heart. this is my winter project in my race car. i would rather use the zf in mine you got the info on the bell houseing that didn't work out for you? how is it coming along

lt4red 05-29-2007 07:45 PM

Isn't the bellhousing to block bolt pattern the same, just minus the top bolt on the ls block that isn't on the lt? Or is it a distance issue, like the flywheel sticks out too far for the zf clutch setup?

tjwong 05-29-2007 07:46 PM

It's a several things issue.

Care to elaborate, just wondering what makes this swap not doable.

Jeffvette 05-29-2007 08:41 PM

Disntace, flywheel size are the two biggest hurdles.

BAM92 05-30-2007 02:39 AM

So is the motor stock or ? Is this why you have been looking for exhaust pieces?

Ported LS6 heads and a cam with some other goodies.

Headers will be custom fabbed and haven't figured out what I'll do for the exit portion of the exhaust.

Cool project, keep us posted.

arkangel81 05-30-2007 11:11 PM

that looks like it will be BADASS!!!

Best valve covers I've seen on and LS engine

But where are you mounting the coils?

Correct me if I'm wrong but since this is a race car I think he will have plenty of room where the old A/C and heater fan used to be.

Jeffvette 05-31-2007 12:50 AM

There is plenty of room in there. I need to get some better shots of the motor in the bay and the space.

I plan on mounting the coils on the diagnal brace going from the hood mounts to the frame.

You're welcome ;)

Good to see some progress on this car, and am looking forward to seeing it on a track sometime soon!

How bout some specs on that motor, I know it has to be a monster.

My major hurdle is the trans bracket I bought that was supposed to
work didn't. It's a POS. So I'm spending time fabbing one up.

Can you elaborate to identify the vendor of the unsatisfactory bracket
and what the issue(s) are? Images?

My vote is it will be a while before someone outdoes the exemplary job
CHarris85Vette did in doggedly completing and documenting his swap.
kpforce1 is up there, too, but still working towards completion, AFAIK.

 I knew somebody would make a LS series engine look good!!

The issue was the bracket was supposidly made on a jig consisting of a T56 tailshaft housing. How that was done is beyond me. Because if you get one bolt lined up correctly none of the others lined up. The channel for the C beam was to big and the suggestion was to cut some meat off of the thickness, which was a unsatisfactory resolution for me. Also the welds were not done to my satisfaction either. They might have held, but there wasn't enough penetration IMHO.

So here is my bracket in it's raw glory.
