What is the correct carburetor for a 1968 427/390hp 4 speed
 

Which is the matching number carburetor for a 1968 corvette 427/390hp with a 4 speed. I have been told #7028209 is the correct one for a manual trans,and also #7028216. Let me know your thoughts.

According to the Black Book those numbers are correct.

The correct carburetor for a 1968 Corvete L-36 with a manual transmission is 7028209.

For a 1968 Corvette L-36 backed by an automatic transmission, the correct carburetor is 7028216.

just FYI, at least in 68 and most likely in other years, rochesters that end in an odd digit are for a manual trans only, even numbers are for auto trans......

It is the unobtainable one. :lol: Unless you are judging the car, buy a Q-Jet for any '68, set it up to the same jets and rods, and use it.

If you find and buy the 7028209, keep it dry, clean, and on a shelf except for a judging meet.

If anyone has the matching number carb with the correct numbers 7028209 please let me know.

There is one that circulates on eBay occasionally. However, it is a restamp. The price is usually around $300. It is a poor restamp, too.

Be sure to check inside the bowl of any you buy. Years ago, these went through the octane booster period where many ran it trying to make up for the bad gas in the late '70s. The octane booster didn't help the performance much if any, but it did play havoc on the pot metal of the fuel bowls.

The 68 carbs are extra expensive and rare because the corvette numbers were only used on corvettes. In 1969 the corvette number carbs were also used on many other chevys, so there are more of those carbs around.... but even the 69 carbs are expensive.

Problem is, even if you found a nice 7028209 and restored it, you probably won't have the right date anyway. :lol:

I have an Edelbrock Qjet. One of these days I'm going to stamp "7028209" on it! And the right date too. :)

Yeah, tell me about it! I've seen "cores" for $300.00 - 400.00 here and there. Right now, I have a incorrect year Q-jet that Lars rebuilt for me that works great. I just wanted a correct year Q-jet for my '68.

there was a guy selling a real nice one on this forum within the past few months, I think he wanted 600$.

Yeah, I PM'd him when he had it. I have an 427-390 with A/T. I wanted that carb, but it won't work for me. Good price on a nice carb though...

There is a carb rebuilder in NJ, that's where I got mine. 7028209! His name is phill 1/732/356/4333.paid a pretty penny for it but I have the right carb, mine is a numbers matching 1968 -427-390 .

I wish I could go back 10 years to get the 7040205 carb for my 70 LS-5. When I first bought my car 4 years ago with the wrong carb the right one was $600 and I considered it, the next year it was $800, then $1200, last year $2400 so needless to say my car will not have the correct carb while I own it. One vender told me years ago the Chevelle guys would have to pay "Vette prices for that carb but now us Vette guys have to pay "Chevelle prices" to get it.
