Why is this happening? (ASR & ABS)
Well, on my way back to work after dinner, I got a little throttle happy in second gear (6speed) and ran the RPMs up to about 4500 then all of a sudden my "service ASR" and "service ABS" lights came on. Also, the large "BRAKE" light in the main instrument cluster; the same light that notifies you the ebrake is engaged. Once I let out of it the "BRAKE" light went off but the two service lights stayed on. When I restarted the car, they all cleared out. This is now the second time this has happened to me. Why am I getting these service lights in high rpm situations? I'm not even going above 60mph.:willy:

Logic would dictate you are spinning a wheel, thus activating the ASR.
But that would not account for the park brake light coming on. USAF? I was 35 yrs ago (TSgt, C-130) and my son is now (Crewchief F-15). Go Air Force! Oh, and good luck with the vette too. |
oh yeah, I forgot to mention I had ASR Off when this happened. That's why I can't really figure it out. ASR shouldn't have even kicked in, let alone throwing two service lights and the "Brake" light on the dash instrument cluster.

check the brake fluid level.
also, you may have a sensor or another failure. what year? |
brake fluid level, or the tires kept spinning even with asr / abs activation

abs works regardless of asr
|
How's your battery/alternator charging. If it drops to ~10v it will disable the ABS/ASR.

So I'll check the fluid and the volts. As for the brakes being worn, they are fairly new so I'm assuming that wouldnt be the issue. |

I have found a service bulletin on all data issued by GM about 92 and early 93 m/cyls being very sensitive to fluid level. (Mostly durring hard cornering or braking) They even had a p/n for a replacement resevoir to remedy the problem. When the fluid is low (or brake pads worn) it will set a code in the abs comp which lights abs/asr warning lights and red brake fluid level light. I had this same thing happen alot. (Had a master cyl leak). Check for codes, I dont remember but low brake fluid I belive is code 83. If you need a copy of bulletin let me know.

Here is a copy
ABS Light - Comes On, False Code 83 (Low Fluid) Set Number: 93-224-5 Section: 5 Date: JUNE 1993 Corporate Bulletin No.: 335007 ASE No.: A5 Subject: BRAKE SERVICE LIGHT/ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM (ABS) LIGHT COMES ON, FALSE CODE 83 Model and Year: 1992-93 CORVETTE CONDITION: Brake service light (red) and ABS light (amber) come on and fault code "83" (low fluid) is stored. CAUSE: At lower fluid levels (due to partial lining wear), the brake fluid level sensor introduced on the 1992 Corvette may be overly sensitive during severe braking and/or handling maneuvers. CORRECTION: To correct this condition, revisions were made to the fluid reservoir to reduce sensitivity to fluid movements during dynamic braking and turning conditions at lower fluid levels with partial lining wear. This new reservoir went into production with VIN P5114078. On vehicles built prior to this, replace the existing brake fluid reservoir (Part 12509940) with the new reservoir (Part 12512995). Refer to Section 5A-7 in the 1992-93 Corvette Service Manual for replacing the reservoir. The O-rings (Part 12509976) must also be replaced. NOTE: The brakes "DO NOT" have to be bled. After reinstalling the reservoir, plug the prime pipe nipple and refill the reservoir with new fluid. Carefully pour some fluid into the prime pipe until it is full and then remove the plug from the nipple and reinstall the prime pipe after allowing some fluid to run from the nipple. This will insure that no air is left in the system. Remove the stored Code 83 from the history memory of the ABS controller. In all cases where the fluid level is low due to worn linings, the brake service lamps will illuminate and fault code "83" will be stored. To correct this condition, the brake linings will have to be replaced. Also, remove the stored code "83" from the history memory of the ABS controller. In some cases the wrong components were replaced and/ or fluid was added to the reservoir to bring the fluid to the full level. On vehicles with worn brakes, the fluid level in the reservoir is low due to the normal lining wear. When replacing the reservoir and adding new fluid, the fluid level should closely match the level in the old reservoir. If the fluid is filled to the full mark with worn linings, the excess fluid will have to be removed to avoid overflowing when replacing the brake linings. PART AVAILABILITY: Parts are expected to be available on 6/21/93. WARRANTY INFORMATION: Labor Operation: H-2489 Use Existing Labor Times. . |

Ok so here's the update. I did a couple hard pulls in second (where the problem first happened) and managed to get the same symptoms around 4500-5000rpms. I watched my voltage as it was mentioned and it stayed a constant 14.2 volts. As for the fuild level, I checked it this morning and its about halfway between the "min" and "max" so I'm gonna try and get some brake fluid and top it off and try pulling the codes to see what else is there.
Its my understanding a 1992 takes DOT 3 brake fluid right? Is there any specific brand I need or will any DOT3 work? Thanks for all your help so far. I'll keep you posted on if this fixes it. |

I used plain old dot 3 brake fluid I got from autozone. Any dot 3 fliud should be okay.

I had the same exact problem with my 94 under hard acceleration or under normal braking. Then it started to turn on all the time when I started the car. Took it to the shop and they just topped off the brake fluid and that solved the problem.
