GM listing left & right head gaskets?

I have noticed that GM is showing different part number for ls1 head gaskets.
Left = Pt.#12558810 $39.00 each
Right = Pt.#88894342 $319.00 each
Is it necessary to use both numbers or just two left ones (Pt.#12558810)?
Does anyone know the different thicknesses of
Cometic
GM
Fel Pro
thanks,Jim

No, dont use two of the same. You will create a cooling nightmare. By doing that, you will be blocking the rear cooling passages on the right side of the motor. You'll cook it in an instant. Not to mention building a new motor.

Stock GM MLS gaskets are .054.
I am running Cometic .051.

Believe it or not, one of the best things on the stock motor, is the head gaskest. Unless your trying to bump up the compression, or tighten up the quench, your wayyy better off going with the GM gaskets.

Jim,
Are the gaskets you're looking for going on your 2000 LS1?

Robert

This is something I am debating right now as well. The Cometics have a performance advantage but the surface preparation, flatness of the block and surface roughness are very critical. The GM MLS are very forgiving as MLS gaskets go.

Is it really $319.00 for 1 head gasket?

Yes it is a 2000 LS1 engine in question.

I just checked and the correct number for you should be 12600530. BTW, that number is now current for '97-'07 5.3, 5.7 and 6.0 LS engines, including the Corvette applications of course.
Where did you come up with the other numbers you listed? Also, the right/left info too?

My mistake here. I was thinking exhaust manifold gaskets and you are looking for Cylinder head gaskets. :ack:

OK, here's the numbers you need:

RH 12558809
LH 12558810

They are the same price. $30.43 ea. through Forum vendor Fichtner Chev. Call: 1-800-234-5284 and speak to Bob. He'll fix you up.

BTW, that 88894342 is not even in the GM part number system at all. It MAY have been a "valve grind" set (commonly called), as that price is so high.

vettenuts 10-08-2007 12:42 PM

Aren't those the numbers for the graphite gaskets? Why not MLS?

To be honest, I'm not sure on composition. These are the factory stock replacement numbers. If you've used them, you would probably know better than I.

Actually, last install I used the 6.0 gaskets so I don't know for sure either. I am going through the research now on gaskets.

SteveDoten 10-08-2007 04:45 PM

IIRC, '01 and newer cars used the MLS(multi layer steel gaskets), I would use these, unless you have the old 97/8 heads with the casting notch in the heads(can't use the MLS)

should be about $50/pair

you'll see FRONT in grey paint

Y2Kvert4me 10-08-2007 06:57 PM

Actually, the casting notch (present on all 97/98 heads) also occured on "some" (not all) 853 LS1 heads through 2000. Also, only some of the 862 5.3l heads had the notch too.

That is why 00/01 is the dividing line.

And, FWIW, I'm running 5.3 heads that DO have the notch, and the Cometic MLS gaskets are working just fine.

I can't say for certain if the GM MLS definitely won't work with the notched heads...but I believe they will work. The previous owner of the heads I have did use them with GM MLS, and had had no issues.

My best guess is at some point, the MLS gaskets got a slight redesign to also work with the notched heads, but I don't know that for fact.

Some of the other numbers have changed into a complete head gasket kit, hence the price.

The original part numbers are now higher than the kit prices. GM has added the head gaskets into a kit of 2 for about 1/2 the price. Always use the numbers below!

||--Genuine GM Cylinder Head Bolts And Gasket Kits--||

12498543 - 97-01 LS1 Engine Head Gaskets (2) – 39.48
12498544 - 02-04 LS1 & LS6 Engine Head Gaskets (2) – 28.56
12498545 - 97-12/03 LS1 & LS6 Engine Head Bolts – 20.16 per head
17800568 – 01/04 – present LS1/LS6/LS2 Head Bolts – 18.48 per head

If you’re not sure which bolt kit to use please email us your VIN# and we’ll tell you!

Good Morning.
Can you get me the head gaskets and Head bolts for the above prices?
Engine is from a 2000 Convertible purchased in 1999.
This is that engine I've been sitting on for almost 3 years.
Getting ready to install it. Replacing all the gaskets and seals.
I can contact you on Monday Aug 1st with my credit card info.
