In-car video of a lil' 1 mile run on my lil' 300 shot

Hey guys,
I was messing around with my video editing software this morning, and wound up with a video that still needs a little work, but is worth watching. It is the in-car video from my land speed racing down in Maxton, NC this past weekend. I was shooting for some higher speeds, but didn't have enough long-lasting pressure on the NOS bottle to spray in 3rd, 4th, and 5th, and will probably put two bottles in there for some of the spring runs. I think I've seen some of those big 3 bottle setups too... any opinions? I started at about 1050, but by the time i sprayed in 3rd and 4th, I think it was running out of pressure for 5th. Bottle pressure was down to about 600 by the end of the run.

In this run, I did 191mph, and in the spring should be able to do 215-217 or so... unless I make a few changes (like gears and/or a vacuum pump system) and then it's possible that I might actually break 220mph in the mile. Click on the link below, if it starts sputtering make sure to hit pause and give it a minute to catch up on the downloads, and then you should be able to run it straight through...
See ya,
Sonny

If you are going to spray that much I would go mutli bottle.
Are you running a 10 pound bottle now?

I would consider 2 10's#, but maybe even 2 15's#?

I think the carbon fiber bottle is 12#'s.... but big bucks. I dont know your weight concerns.

SonnyinVA 10-24-2007 09:55 PM

Yeah, right now I am running a 10# bottle. I was thinking about going to 15's... Most land speed racers will tell you that weight concerns are not that critical for land speed racing... some of them even try to use weight as ballast, but I like to keep it down anyway. I think when you only have a mile to get up to top speed, it's not like out on the salt flats where you have 5 miles or 7 miles or something. How light are the CF bottles?

See ya,
Sonny

Any pics of your video mount?
I'd like to get mine setup more like yours, I like how you can see what your doing.

Hey Brian,
How are ya? It's just one of those cage mount camera mounts... I have the cam mounted to one of the rear downtubes on the cage, and it allows me to get a decent angle. I use a tiny little Casio Exilim 5.5MB camera that also does MPEG4 videos. I have a 2 GB SD card in it that will allow for a little bit more than an hour of video on the highest resolution setting. You can actually get 4GB SD cards now too, if if you want more storage. Just make sure you get one of the high transfer speed discs.
Let me know if that helps... of if you need a pic of the set up.
See ya,
Sonny

the CF bottles are all avertised as almost cutting a 10# bottles wieght in half when empty.
amazon rates the shipping on the bottle at 8.8 pounds

they also rate the regular 15 pound bottle at 20.2 pounds and another at 17.8
and a 10 pound bottle at 12.8...

everyone says a 10# bottle wieghs 15 pounds empty, and 25 full.

just for fun...
a 20# bottle is rated at 27.4

I have a 15lb bottle I bought from Michigan Cylinder, from ebay. Great bottle at unbelieveable prices. It was like $180 including shipping, bottle nut, and liquid filled gauge. Just snug everything up when you get it as gauge and nut is installed loose. Completely assembled it weighs 19.6 pounds completely empty. They fill it to 35.0 lbs. You could by a 15, then run both the 15 and the 10. I run a Zex kit and love it because it regulates the enrichment fuel according to bottle pressure so it doesn't run rich as bottle pressure drops. May work perfect for you, it works perfect when I'm on the highway and someone pulls up beside me and my bottle pressure is only 750 or so.......oops, had to edit. Noticed you said a 300 shot. Zex it only handles 175 jets, you would need 2 separate kits or it wouldn't work for you.

cool, i appreciate the info and i am wide open to more. anybody else got more suggestions?

What size feed line? And how do you prepare your bottles? I run two 10# bottles, but only on 1/4 mile spurts. Before I started using the water bath I would see quite a bit of pressure drop on a 200 shot (first stage) but now with a good 95 degree soak and making my runs at 92 degrees, the bottle pressure stays good. I run a -6 everflex nitrous line.
