Clicking noise in rear?
 

I'm hearing what sounds like a switch being turned on and off about two times when I accelerate from a stop and when the engine hits 20-2400 rpm.

It sounds like it's coming from the area by the fuel pump. Anybody have any ideas?

Is it every time, or just the first time that the car starts rolling?

Do you know about the ABS test that the car does the first time it starts rolling? (I didnt....) Someone here had to explain it to me.

Everytime I move from stop, whether it's warmed up or not. I know it's not the ABS system. That has a different sound. I'm hearing subtle clicks. They seem to have gotten steadily louder since I noticed it about 10 days ago.

Otherwise the car runs fine. Iwas guessing the fuel pump since I've heard based on my setup I'm probably overworking it.

That's easy to check and I will but the sound only comes up in the narrow rpm range mentioned above. When start from a standing stop and keep it below 2000 rpm, there is no sound.

It's one of your u-joints on one of the half-shafts. Mine was making the same exact noise, and I found on of the caps on a u-joint completely dry. I replaced both sets of u-joints and the noise went away.

Hey Glenn, it sounds like the U joints as mentioned above. 65Z01 had the same sound I believe and he had a U joint replaced.

Maybe you can page him for more info.

I had clicking when starting from a stop, when I first got the car, had to replace the rear rotors and pads to pass inspection, and the clicking went away. If your pad are old, might want to try replacing them, see if it helps.

See if you can isolate the sound to one side (use a bystander).
I wouldn't rule out rust on one of the rear spindles either. A new rear bearing/hub would fix that but the rust can be cleaned off pretty easily.
That problem is known for causing a loud CLICK sound, or series of clicks, when starting from a stop. It would click again when letting your foot off the gas if you have a manual tranny.

TDOCK : I doubt it's the rotors, they are about 2 months old.

Thud: I'll ask my mechanic to check them but they're about two years old.

Vic and 91-z07 : I'm thinking the u-joints just might be the problem. Its one of the few things I haven't replaced on this car. Also, It started after the Corvette Challenge on 10/10. I hooked pretty hard on three runs that day with 60 ft times from 1.8x - 1.9x with street tires.

Glenn, I'm with Thud on this one. Very likely rust on the spindles. It can happen no matter how new your brearings are. Have someone on the outside listen as you make it do the clicking sound. If it is rust on the spindles, it will sound like it is coming from the wheel. Makes 1 to 5 clicks when taking off from stop? Just keep your thoughts open to this possiblility.

My vote is U-joints. Mine were clciking, pulled the half shafts and they were totally dry and had actually become "splined". Scorp's car did the sam thign a few weeks later at the dragstrip, he pulled them and found the same thing. He has a nice step by step pictorial on his webpage.

How many miles on the car? I'm gonna guess U-joints also. Good to get them done if there are lots of miles on it already.

jack the car and ( with it properly supported ) pull on the wheel left to right up & down see if you can narrow it down.

If you can't detech anything, jack both rear wheels off the ground take it out of gear and spin it. See if it shows up.

BTW check your diff bolts.

Scorp 140k miles and I don't believe they have been done before.

I'm taking a ride with my mechanic on friday. I'll post and let you guys know who "won". Unfortunately I lose either way. :cry

This might be a good time to replace my worn shocks and go to high capacity fuel pump since the mechanic is going to have it anyway.

With 140K miles , I would replace the U-joints on both halfshafts and the drive shaft.

I've got the same problem. On Friday I'm gonna pull the halfshaft and replace the U-joint. I've already purchased the new U-joint and new bushings for the leaf spring bolt, as well as a tie rod fork, so I think I'm ready to go. Scorp's page has a beautiful set of directions, so I'm fairly confident that I can pull it off (and put it back on). Better yet, my 17-year old son will be there to 'help' me, so it'll be a good father-son project.

Definitely check your lug nuts. The clicking gets
louder steadily and then....poof...the wheel
flies off. I know a guy who sheared off two
of the wheel studs this way. Not much fun.
