another unkown part

Well this is the last unknown part on the car. The guys at Autozone don't know what it is. It's nowhere in the Haynes. The guys @ the Chevy Store look at me like I'm stupid. I probably am but that's besides the point :-D Maybe you guys can help.

It has some kind of vacuum hose port. It also has a place for a 2 prong connector and a rather large hole for the bolt to go through.

Once I know what this is I'll have the whole car together.
Whew.

scorp508 11-21-2001 09:09 PM

Well umm.... where did you take it OFF of? :jester

Scorps right... where??
what year???

I am guessing EGR solinoid.

scorp508 11-21-2001 09:15 PM

I am guessing EGR solinoid.
I'm thinking the same thing. Especially since it is only a 2-prong wire connector. To me this means whatever it is only has an "on/off" function, and has no "sensing" capabilities. And an EGR solinoid is like this.

I believe that's part of the "flux capacitor" from a DeLorean.
:smash:

Re: another unkown part

I don't know where it came off...
:bb
My little brother and I are rebuilding it and the part got put into a bin where it did not belong (clutch parts bin, it's obviously not a clutch part)
WE kept almost everything straight, but when you have a car in 410 seperate pieces you are bound to screw something up.
EGR solenoid looks like a real possibility, any other ideas?

It's off an 86, BTW.

Re: another unkown part (jopod)

I'd agree that that sorta kinda looks like the EGR solenoid that bolts down to the gooseneck; but it doesn't look like the one on my 89!

You have got to learn to label these things! :D

Re: another unkown part (jopod)

It IS the EGR solenoid. BTW, don't waste your time trying to find an extra vacuum line to it. There is a port on the solenoid that just is a mini 'exhaust port' if you will. Once you start connecting the vacuum lines to it, you will see what I mean. -Matt-

Re: another unkown part (jopod)

I have it on mine and was wondering the same thing. It bolts to the backside of the air pump on the mounting bolt that's closest to the passenger side. Hang on, I'll go get a pic...

Re: another unkown part (TJR)

Does Not! It bolts to the rearward bolt on the thermostat houseing!

(AND it's an EGR valve thingy. I just fiddled with mine last weekend.)

Re: another unkown part (TJR)

In the first pic, the yellow arrow points to the bolt. Maybe it's possible it could bolt to the thermo housing, but that one line going to it is hard plastic and I don't see how it could bend to the other location.
The blue arrow points out the line that hooks to the throttle body.
The red arrow points out the line that goes to the flying saucer looking thing near the rear of the intake, shown in the second pic.
The green arrow points to the rubber cap I put on the vacuum leak, but after reading what Highhopes85 said, maybe I should remove that. :)

In this pic, the yellow arrows point to the line coming from the unknown part to the UFO thing. (This is tech talk.)
The red arrow points to the UFO thing.
This is the passenger side of the motor.

This is just another pic of the mystery part. Hey check out that brand new alternator. :)

Well, it bolts to the thermostat housing on my 89...ymmv :bb

The hardlines I had worked great for it in that location...note the past tense. Hardlines don't seem to age well. :(

Re: another unkown part (jopod)

It's the egr solenoid and mounts on the top rear of the water outlet (from the manifold to the radiator). Once mounted, the leftside vacuum source is from a tee off the fuel vapor canister. The left side of the tee goes to the underside of the throttle body and the rightside of the tee goes to the leftside of the solenoid. The right side of the solenoid connects to the egr valve. Sorry I don't have a camera; otherwise I'd post a pic. Check your radiator shroud for vacuum line routing. If you're lucky, the schematic is still there.

Re: another unkown part (SunCr)

With the 2 prong connector it's not just on/off. I have a similar setup on my '94 Towncar. The computer sends a pulsed signal to the EGR positioning valve (above) and the faster it pulses the more exhaust gas gets re-circulated to the intake. This way the ERG valve can acctualy be positioned anywhere from closed to wide open. At startup, before the engine reaches temp, and at WOT there is no signal and therefore no exhaust gas recirculated. At crusing speed the computer calculates the amount of exhaust gas needed, sends pulses to the positioning valve which positions the ERG valve.

It's the EGR solenoid, here's a routing diagram from Chevy Thunder.

Only on the Corvette Forum can we talk in terms of "UFO Looking Thingie" and know exactly what the other person is talking about.

Dammit, now I have to go relocate mine to the right spot.

There I go messing people up again

-K- if you look in the second picture in JPod's first post, you will see that port that has a vacuum line cap with a green arrow in another post. In the second picture, first post, notice how on the far left, there is a (insert joke here) thin shaft with a hole in it. At first, I thought there was supposed to be a vacuum line on it, but there isn't. Anyone know what the heck I am talking about, cause I sure don't anymore. -Matt-

Re: another unkown part (Mark84_L383)

The "to HVAC" line is what's giving me trouble now. The diagram in the car says the same thing, but I can't find where the tube goes.
There is another vac line very close to the "to HVAC" tube but this one has a filter-looking thing and a t-splitter. how do I connect these? The car seems to run fine without them connected though, I would just like to have everything hooked up like it's supposed to be.
