How much bore is too much?
 

Right now, with a 3.75 " stroke (3.48" stock) and a cylinder diameter of 4.030" (4.000" stock) makes a 383. But, if the cylinders are bored to 4.100" , the displacement is a 396. How much can you bore a 350? Is a 0.100" overbore possible?

Pros? Cons? Overheating issues?

I would have a hard time going over 60 thousands but I'm the conservative type. Have you considered the 400 sb? I've heard that if you're ever going to put any power to it don't go more than 60 over.

A 400sb would be nice, but I'm keeping my 350 until something drastic happens. Hope that it never will!! Okay, would boring it another 0.030" improve things a great deal?

That'd be 388 cu.in. Would that even be worthwhile doing?

If it has a little ring groove in it or a lip at the top of the cylinder I would take bore it a little. I have mine apart right now with 88k on the L98. I was surprised to see no ring groove and hardly any lip. When you start boring them heat deffinately comes into play. We scrap our race motors after they been bored 60 over. They make nice planters for yard decor :cool:

YIKES!! I think I'll stick with my 383 then. I'm just looking for something to help me. I guess I'm a little bit frustrated from todays dyno run.

.030 is considered a safe overbore. Some guys recommend sonic testing for .060. .10 is probably too much for stock small block. Some of the bow tie blocks (read $$$$) can go to larger over bores. Dart makes a block that can go to 455 ci with a large overbore.

Hey Vette9d1!!!! How are things? How are those runners? I initially got those runners from a guy named Dan Baldwin. I hear he's got a pretty reputable name around these parts. A week after I bought those runners, I said the hell with it, I'm getting me a super ram . I love the torque and hp increases. I think it's my stock injectors (22#) and stock valves in my ported heads are limiting me to the hp #'s I'm seeing. I'd love to see the polished job when it's done.

As for the cubes...I was just pondering the thought of going to 396. That would mean a 0.100" overbore over stock. Right now, I'm only 0.030" over bore. But the difference between those is miniscule, but then again, so are the cylinder wall thicknes right now. Just a thought. I was thinking maybe a 396 "small block" would sound kinda cool.

I am surprised no one has stepped in yet. A 396 is had by dropping in a 3.875" crank with the 0.030 overbore. You can add more stroke without worrying about the water jacket and or cooling. Forget about boring 0.100 oversize.
