Here comes the Paint. PICS
Well many of you have seen my 85 vette around here or in person. I think that most of you think its a fairly clean vette in and out, as it is. I have 45k miles and it has been well taken care of. Some love the rims others dont, but what can you do.
The thing is the paint is shot ! From 5 feet away the thing looks like a jem stone, but when the sun is out,,; look out. Here are some pics of the bad Paint. Ill update you as I go. Ill be taking all the bumpers off, mirrors, lights, etc and will prep it my self. I plan to D/A it with 80, then 150. I will then use 150 Red Scotch brite and get all the corners. Clean it With Prep sol and use some Dupont Primer 7704S. Ill then Spray a black guide coat and wet sand it with 400 to start and then 600. The next step will be figuring out who is going to spray it for me that I trust and will do a great job. I have a few in mind. I would spray it in the garage but I know silver and fiberglass attract a lot of dirt. It will be stock color, 85 silver with a clear coat, Or I may use a 01 c5 silver or c6 silver. Ill investigate that all later, i mean silver is pretty much silver. Wont do the jams so the silver has to match... So from 5 feet away its NICE ! http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q...t/DSC03393.jpg http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q...t/DSC03394.jpg Here is the issues, Im going to have to sand this down good ! Said to be bad primer underneath. http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q...t/DSC03391.jpg http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q...t/DSC03401.jpg http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q...t/DSC03400.jpg http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q...t/DSC03398.jpg http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q...t/DSC03397.jpg http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q...t/DSC03396.jpg and the way it will look when its done  http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q...t/DSC03142.jpg |
Just curious, was this Corvette out in the weather, not garaged, most of its life???
I see it has only 45K miles, just wondering how the paint got in that condition. |

I have heard that the pigments in silver age very fast. My wife and I briefly owned a silver accord that was only 2 yrs old when we acquired it from the original owner. It was garage kept when not used and the paint was already showing discoloration. But AZ sun is terrible on all of our cars paint just the same. This guys car is 22 yrs old and otherwise looks great.

Yeah needs alittle lovin

Do House of Kolor Silver it is real nice.... lots of flake to it and it will blind you in the sun.

You've got nothing to lose anyway... I would take it to a professional detailer and see what can be done. In pictures its impossible to tell, and what makes it worse is that its silver, but looks to me that the CC is ok, it hasn't failed yet, and the paint looks good. If you have heavy swirling and marring, that can all be wetsanded and buffed out again to glass. Before you tear up what could be a nice paint job in disguise have a pro at least take a look at it.
Check out this link It may be helpful.... http://autopia.org/forum/click-brag/...light=Corvette Hope this helps, DG |
thats what is happening to my paint

Thanks for all the input.
The clear is ok but that is not the problem. What you see is very hard to describe and if you saw it you still may not know what it is. I was under the impression that the fiberglass was showing through the car, but I was wrong. The car is ruff and you can feel the marks. This is not fixable. I dont think the car has sat out side for ever because the interior is in such good shape. What I was told is that with the car being silver, and a bad factory paint job and or a nicely done repaint that went bad. I am told that the primer under the paint did not cure properly and that is what you see. So yes the clear is ok and the pain, but the primer is messing the hole thing up... What I have to do is take it down !!!!! Ill keep u posted.. Dan |
well thats what mine looks like on the lower section of the drivers door
cant feel anything though and the clearcoat seems OK......its leading me to beleive just this section of the car was painted for some reason at a point in its life |

House of Kolor is really expensive though. I mean if you want the best paint job out there and are willing to pay, then go for it.
|
I mean in regards to du pont how much more, the other thing is i want it to be close to the door jam silver aswell
