GM Cancels V8 Program for Cadillac
 

General Motors has announced that it has canceled its plans to build a new advanced double overhead-cam V8 for its luxury cars. The cancellation leaves the future of V8-powered Cadillacs — other than the XLR sports car — up in the air.

The planned called for a $300 million investment in GM's Tonawanda, New York engine plant where production of the new V8 engine was slated for 2009. GM Powertrain spokesman Tom Read announced today that the project is dead.

The new engine would have likely replaced the current Northstar V8 used in Cadillac vehicles. The Northstar powerplant will cease production in 2010.

Instead, it is likely that GM will switch to higher-output V6 engines. The new direct-injection V6 used in the Cadillac CTS develops almost as much horsepower as a V8. “We’ve really seen the V6 become the predominant engine in sales on the (2008) STS because it’s so close in power to the V8,” Cadillac spokesman Kevin Smith told Automotive News.

No word on how the cancellation will affect Cadillac's V-series of cars.

It is believed that the recently passed CAFE standards are responsible for the cancellation and that the death of the program could be an indication of things to come throughout the entire auto industry.

What is the point of the Northstar anyway, couldnt they just use the LS motor? Do they have to be different because of Cadillac?

Well the CTS-V used the LS2, unfortunately I believe that car was discontinued since the 08 CTS seems to only have V6 engines.

sources indicate that the 2009 cts-v will run a detuned version of the LS9. It's not cancelled, it's just not an 08 model

dont worry, the only reason they did that was
because the v6 is now making almost the same hp as the v8

and this is just for the sts......the cts, will get the supercharged ls....
the xlr will keep the v8, and the dts, i think they are gonna stop making it or no one buys it or cares;)

who knows maybe you would see a v6 in a vette if it was making 500hp like a v8:crazy: (not talking about the gtr:lol: )

The Northstar was an incredible engine when it came out in 1993 - 300 HP from 4.6 L. It was nothing like GM had mass produced before. I had a 93 STS that would run right next to my 1994 Vette up to about 40. GM just didn't keep developing it over the years as they have with the Vette engines.

It's going to be an interesting few years for new cars.

If we gave an LS engine to the Cadillac counterparts, what's the point of owning a Corvette then? I always liked the uniqueness of engine that we had. Sort of like McDonalds. They served it first, and then there was a Burger King here, and Arby's there. Just horrible.

Yes, but the logic is flawed. The reason the V6 has as much hp as the Northstar is because the Nothstar has been ignored for the last ten years. The most powerful Northstar (other than the V) has 320 hp. Lexus, Mercedes and BMW have V8's now with 360-380 hp in their comparable cars.

And that's the problem Cadillac faces with the decision they just made. Once again, they are not going to keep pace with the rest of the world. And gas mileage can be obtained with a V8. Look up the EPA ratings for the Lexus LS460. It's nearly as good as most 300hp V6's.

Well, considering the LS is also in about a million pickup trucks and large SUV's, why would you not want it in Cadillac cars?

The Cadillac engine has been so reliable and fuel efficient. I for one will be rather disappointed should they opt to change. I've had that v8 in all of my Cadillac's and have been very satisfied.

I think Caddy people are way different in what they look for in a car than Corvette people and perhaps a peppy six is just the ticket for them.

Yeah, but I don't GM just wants to keep sellng cars to "Caddy people". I think they are pretty interested in Lexus, Mercedes and BMW people. They six works in the $40-50k range, but not in the $70-80k range.
