What is this clutch pack on my alternator pulley?

I had the alternator on my 05 Coupe replaced under warranty. The newer alternator the dealer put on has some sort of clutch like system on the pulley, not just a nut.

What is this and what does it do? Why didn't my 05 have it, or did it?

GWHITE75 01-15-2008 06:17 PM

It allows the alternator to free wheel on deceleration, in order to rob less power.

Not mine

My 06 does'nt appear to have it.Rod:flag: :flag: :chevy :chevy :flag: :flag:

Did the 05 pulleys have them? Is this just something I can take off and put a smaller pulley on? Do they make smaller alternator pulleys for the 07 alternator?

Can you post a pic?

If I didn't know better I'd think you were looking at the AC. :willy:

OK Navy .....you said there is no clutch pack on the generator .... uhm, there is no GENERATOR! Wait, I guess that means you are 100% correct, sorry!;)

calm down...it's a 1-way roller clutch....to keep from tossing the belt on rapid decel from high rpm. Not oem on any vette, but in the parts system, I found mine. It still will not handle 7k+rpm duty w/o "ticking":toetap:

I have never seen anything like that before. Any chance we can see a picture?

I know they released a clutched alternator for the C6 Z06 to combat belt slippage. Maybe you have that alternator now?

calemasters 01-15-2008 10:31 PM

I replaced the generator on my '05 last month. I can not remember if the original generator had the over-run clutch or not.

My daughter's '99 coupe has the same over running clutch on her alternator. The first time I had the belt off to troubleshoot a belt squeal, I spun the pulley and then grabbed it to spin it the other way and the alternator rotor kept spinning. It was shocking the first time it happened, but it's definitely there.

In 2001 they put them on auto c5s. Clutch pulley, Helps keep the belt from slipping or jumping off:thumbs: Anyone with a magnacharger pre01 probably has found this out lol

Huh? I said alternator. What are you talking about?

Maybe I did get a Z06 alternator. All I know is I don't want this stupid thing because it doesn't look like I can bolt a normal smaller pulley on it.

Anyone want to trade alternators?

Has anyone w/o this clutch pack had trouble with their belts slipping off under rapid decel?
