1972 Corvette 454 carb numbers for Auto & Standard Transmission

1972 Corvette 454 carb numbers for Auto & Standard Transmission When you look at the image of the carbs the 216 looks nice and clear, the 217 looks like the stamping was not done so clear as if it were double stamped. The 1, 7, and F look good. If you check your carb number stamping does your carb look more like the 216 Stamping quality? or some of your carbs.do look like the 217? The 217 Carb which I purchased from an individual swears that it was from his 72 Corvette 454 Four Speed that he purchased new from the dealer with a copy of his bill of sale, car was totaled but he kept the engine. He informed me that this is not a restamp but an original Carb made by Carter. Your thoughts please Regards Vic |
Send it to LARS. He will be able to tell by looking at it if it is original or not.

I'm looking for the same carb for my 72 four speed car. I can tell you that in my quest, I have looked at a lot of carbs and have not seen numbers as irregular as your photo. I'm no expert, but it looks a little suspect. Did the guy have any documentation to support?

The 1, 7, and F are fine,
It's a cater, was rebuilt, it's four a 454, the area where the number has been stamped, metal still has the exact same thickness as other carbs, some folks grind it down, then use a sand stone, then glass bead, then re etch the metal, my carb shows no evidence of grinding, but yes it looks like perhaps CATRER did a lously job stamping it as if they hit the stamp twice. Who knows i will presume it's original, the guy who sold it to me keeps swearing that it is.
Regards

The 7042216 is the only thing missing off my car to make it all original. Has someone got one out there for sale please???

Vic -
I've seen all kinds of sloppy number stamps by the factory - looks like the guy who stamped it hit it once, didn't get it to mark well, and then whacked it again - I've seen a lot of that. No reason to think it's a re-stamp. However, the Carter-built carbs usually do not have the "70" prefix to the part number. The "70" prefix designates it as a Rochester-built carb. The Carter carbs normally had part number "42217" without the "70." Does the carb have the "Carter" insert ID in the driver's side..? Lars |
Here's a question ,and I'm only asking cuz I dont know..
If you look at the 4 in the stamping the first light stamp looks like the 4 has a point at the top while the second heavier stamp the tip is flattened. If someone has a few carbs to compare see if there are differences in the numerals used |
I think you are correct look at the photos. Thanks

If you look at the "70" in the stamp and compare it to the rest of the numbers, it appears the "70" is just a tad larger. I think you have a correct Carter 42217 carb, and someone added the "70" not realizing that it shouldn't be there with the Carter-built Q-Jet.
