Aluminum Intake Manifold Sealant
 

A few weeks ago I read a post about leaky intake mainifolds and the use of a sealant to remediate the problem. I will be installing an aluminum intake on a sb this weekend. Any recommendations on type/brand of sealant? Also could use advice on where to apply. I do intend to torque bolts in sequence according to service manual. thanks

I like to use Permatex High Tack spray on the intake and head gaskets. RTV silocone in the corners of the end seals. This next time, I think im gonna use RTV all the way across the end portions, without the cork end seals.

Did you put the RTV between the gasket and the intake in the corners??

My new plan is to toss the cork end seals alltogeather and go with RTV on the ends. I'll lay down a thick enough bead so it squishes out a little after tightening the bolts. Ill then let it set up completly 24hrs min, before starting engine.

Uggg and make one hell of a job when you take apart again and have to wash it? I hate that damn silicone.

Edelbrock recommends Fel-Pro # 1256 for early (pre 1986) manifolds and GM # 10159409 for 1987 to 1995 cast iron heads.

I've used silicone and no gasket on the manifold ends on the last 2 manifolds that I installed and was quite happy with them. One of them did have to come apart and it was no harder to remove than the old manifold had been. Cleaning the gasket surfaces on the ends was not hard at all.
