I need a lesson
Can someone explain to me the difference between point dist. which vette has, and the other such as what my 93 caprice has. How does each work? I want to get the kit from lars.. but i dont understand the basics. Thanks

are u talkin about a distributo revurve kit??
they arent too bad too install.. basically when the distributor spins, the weights (from centrufugal force) cuase the dist to advance the timing... hence the faster it spins the more advance...(dpending on the springs and weights and shape...) so your gonna be swapping out the springs so you can probably geta faster curve.... you might NOT need it though! i checked mine before i started to redo my distributor and im already getting 36 total centrifugal (including the ~14 initial) however i discovered that my vacuum advance can wasnt working.. i suggest before you get the kit, that you map out your distributor advance curve and see if it needs to be optimized more!!! get a timing light with a dial on it... make sure it has a dial. :) |

If your asking what points are. They are a little mechanical switch that makes and breaks the current to the coil. When the current is broken (opened) the field collapses and the coil is a transformer stepping your 12 volts up to the hi voltage for the spark plug.
There is an almost gear, little flats like a nut that corresponds to the 8 cylinders or how ever many, This pushs the points open and a spring closes them. The voltage that is being switched is eating up the contact surface. Thats why you have to change them. Duel points were an attempt to eliminate a high rpm problem, I think its dwell time and had something to do with the charging time for the coil. 2 seperate point systems shared the job. The alternatives are a hall affect sensor (reluctor). This looks like a star and passes a little chunk of metal. This senses the position of the distributor for timing the spark like the points. Looking at it it looks like it wouldn't work but the proximately of the star point to the sensor changes the field or something. The Uni-lite uses a beam of light and a plastic shield that breaks the light beam to do the same thing. Neither of these 2 wears out or needs adjustment. Some cars that have a computer have a distributor but the computer does the timing curve leaving the distributer to send the spark to the right cylinder. The final method is a crank trigger with a coil for each spark plug. No distributer. |
