MGW short throw Install + Pics

Hey Guys, I installed my MGW short throw shifter yesterday and I love it. It was an easy install, but more importantly it is such more fun to drive. Below are some pics of the install...

Remove t15 storque screw holding on the shifter ball.

My shifter was on pretty good, I may suggest a screw driver to pry it up and off...
http://images36.fotki.com/v1160/phot...ture063-vi.jpg
http://images18.fotki.com/v339/photo...ture065-vi.jpg

Peel off the gasket in grey, use a screw driver or razor plade to get all off.
http://images35.fotki.com/v1167/phot...ture078-vi.jpg
http://images34.fotki.com/v1121/phot...ture079-vi.jpg
http://images34.fotki.com/v1122/phot...ture080-vi.jpg

Apply the supplied appoxy.
http://images34.fotki.com/v1121/phot...ture081-vi.jpg

Put on the new MGS shifter with provided bolts, washers and locking washers.
http://images33.fotki.com/v1118/phot...ture082-vi.jpg
http://images36.fotki.com/v1160/phot...ture086-vi.jpg
http://images36.fotki.com/v1158/phot...ture087-vi.jpg

Put rubber boot back on after bolts are tight. I cut the inner circle out of mine for an easier fit.
http://images34.fotki.com/v1143/phot...ture091-vi.jpg
http://images32.fotki.com/v1107/phot...ture094-vi.jpg

Put bolts back over ruber housing.
http://images36.fotki.com/v1161/phot...ture095-vi.jpg

Insert top of shifter, and tighten with provided allen wrench.
http://images36.fotki.com/v1157/phot...ture098-vi.jpg

I put my shifter cap back on and started the car up and tested the gears...
http://images35.fotki.com/v1166/phot...ture102-vi.jpg

At this point I was done with the short throw shifter install.
Just had to put the console back on... :toetap:

Obviously reverse through the install steps to reassemble...
Hook back up your hazards, heated seats and cigarette lighter.
Put the ebrake and side piece back in place after console is in.
Screw the console back in place, same for the lid.
Plug back in the traction controle and airbag button/ led's.
Then reinstall the shifter top and screw...

Great writeup and pictures. I just installed the upgraded shaft yesterday after putting it off for two weeks as I found taking the console off and on a royal pain. I never took off the passenger side trim piece like you did before lifting off the console and wished I had seen your pictures first as I think that makes it much easier. The new shaft went in great and shifting seems even easier now if that was even possible. Love the MGW shifter.

Nice Job. Any rattles from the stock knob or additional interior noise?. If you do notice any additional interior noise, you might want to go back and seal the area between the boot you cut out and the MGW boot with some more of the black silicone. I did this and things got quieter.

Should be noted that this install was on a 2005 model year. The 2008's are different in that there is no passenger side air bag panel in the console. You only need to remove the (2) screws inside the console tray that are under 2 plastic caps that are about the size of a nickel. Then remove the (2) screws in the side trim panel.

Thanks a bunch... now I know I will install my MGW when I put in my new GM matching color console. Only want to have to take the console off once.

I only took it for a little spin last night, just enough to know I really enjoyed the new shifting arrangement... I did look for an increase in noise from the trans, and I did not hear any. But again, I only went around the block... This week after I get some more miles on it, I will report back. I do have some extra black silicone, I may go back in and reinsilate if needed...

You are correct, it is an 2005. Shane
