Dana 60 IRS

I thought you guys might want to see what is probably one of the strongest IRS setups around. This setup is similar to Jim Moore's (427Hotrod) 67 Convertible assembly. I purchased the assembly two years ago from an NHRA class racer. I had planned to run the setup in my car, but life got in the way and I have sold my Corvette. I had the trailing arms and rearend rebuilt by Mike Dyer (tracdogg2). The Crossmember Bushings, Trailing Arm Bushings, Trailing Arm Seals and Bearings have been replaced. The U-Joints are Spicer 1480 Non-Greasable units and are brand new. Almost all pieces are powder coated. The Dana 60 Unit is a spool with a 4.88:1 gear ratio. I don't think that you will find a stronger IRS setup than this. The assembly is ready to bolt in to any C2 or C3 chassis. I am asking $5100 OBO. If you want to run hard at the track with an IRS and not worry about the rear end, this is the kit for you.
Send me a PM or email if you are interested.

For anyone wondering how this compares in terms of pricing to the strongest assembly that Tom's offers, here is the breakdown:

12 Bolt 3rd member $2900
1480 Axle Kit $2255
H.D. Rear Cover $ 130
Assemble Trailing Arms $ 325
Crossmember Locator Kit $ 74
Rear Camber Control Rods $321
Total $6005

Other items included:
Poly Diff Bushing Kit (Eckler's) $ 25
Crossmember Cushions (Eckler's) $120
Spring Bolts - Long (Eckler's) $ 20
Grand Total $6170

Ultra Rare Baddest of Them All Dana 60 IRS Setup $5100

I am inclined to think that over $1,000 less for a far, far stronger unit is a pretty good bargain and don't forget the  factor due to it being quite rare.

Don't forget that for Tom's setup, you'll also need to provide your own case.. The case is not included in Tom's price..

that looks liek the old Peppy's (Peppy Astrada) setup that was used extensively in HHRA/IHRA SS in the 60's and 70's until a total backhalf of the car was legalized

I don't have the details on this setup's history, just the info that Jim (427HotRod) was able to dig up when researching his. Whoever built it overengineered the HE!! out of it that is for sure. I think the rest of the driveline would act as a "fuse" long before this would.

Someone ought to grab this thing. I know mine has been killer!!

Dana 60 Rear End

I may be interested! My '66 recently blew its rear end and I'm looking for a replacement. I would like 3.07 gears in it though, because I have a Richmond 5-speed with 3.28 first gear. The rear end I had in it was a 1981 alluminum and the ring gear bolts came loose and one sheard off causing a hole in the case and untold damage to the pinion. I built the engine with about 600 horses and I race it a couple of times a year on the drag strip. Please let me know if you think I can get this to work for me.

Thanks,

Brandt Hulderman

This thread is over two years old, I wonder if it's all still for sale?

427Hotrod 06-06-2010 07:07 PM

It was sold not long after this post along with the 632" motor that was built to go in front of it. It went to a Forum member in Arkansas. I spoke to him recently and he now has a car to put it all in so he's keeping it.

They still show up from time to time. I just talked to another Forum member last weekend who recently found one at a swap meet. It had a 30 spline posi in it instead of a spool and 4.10 gears. He snatched it up for a street rod project he is building. Not for sale..I tried!

Meanwhile....I'm still beating on the one in may car after many years and haven't touched it. Just did a 2500 mile road trip with it last week!

Rear End Solution

Found something that will work. Going with 9" Ford rear end with extra heavy duty control arms. By the way, this is a show and go car. I can request a shortened 55" hub to hub, which will allow me to run 325/50-15's. Ring and Pinion ratios range from 2.5 to 4.5. I'll get 3.0+ which will give me the following velocities (mi/hr) vs. RPM in each gear:

RPM - 1st Gear - 2nd Gear - 3rd Gear - 4th Gear - 5th Gear
500 4 6 9 11 14

That Dana 60 IRS in the OP looks like what the Hemicuda should have had for wheelie duty.
