Engine break-in procedure?

What is the recommended engine break-in procedure for the LS3?

I've always babied new cars until there is about 1k miles on them. Is this still the case? I hear different things.

your owners manual tells you all you need to know. 500 miles below 55 mph and avoid constant speeds and rpms. avoid panic stops and starts as well. just treat her nice for a little while before you rip.

GM says 500 miles no WOT, vary engine rpm's. No cruising at same speed for long. More in the owner's manual.

You could, with some nice part throttle runups to 3 or 4K rpms. However, the recommended break in, per your owner's manual, is not for the engine but for all the other components: gears, axle, shafts, etc. The other rotating parts that need to mesh.

:iagree: But....hang around a dealership and watch how many test drive C6's and you will hope there is no break-in needed!

My method of "drive it like you stole it" has yet to let me down with any vehicle I have purchased or built :D.

:iagree: I, for the most part, followed this procedure but did have a few WOT burst on highway acceleration ramps

Watch the DVD that came with the car. It will tell you that no special breakin period is needed. But, you should vary your speed, and no hard stops, because it will effect the performance of the brakes later on.

I have always done an easy first 500 miles.... Then WOT as much as you want !!!!

"Break-In" recommendations from the Owner's Manual:

From my experience with GM cars the engine is not the main issue for the break-in procedure. It is for the rear end which tend to be weak for certain GM cars (CTS V).

haljensen 07-17-2008 07:59 PM

Gee, I could almost stay within GM break in guidelines in FIRST GEAR!

55 MPH? Why not state it as "Do Not exceed 2500 RPM for the first 500 miles"?

:iagree: And I think the engine is already tested at the factory.

:iagree: An RPM restriction would make more sense than a MPH restriction.

This kinda puts the kabash on factory delivery, no? Unless you're a resident of Bowling Green...

Lot's of folks do museum delivery and drive more than 500 miles to get home. IMHO, going 65 won't hurt a thing as long as you are not going WOT to get to 65.

Because as was said above, the break in is not only for the engine, but for other geared and rotating parts, where engine RPM is not as important as speed.

55 :ack: This is going to be hard
