Anyone Think Their C6 is Too Refined For Them?

This is my first Corvette. In the past i've have Camaros and Mustangs. I bought my Corvette because I wanted rwd, a powerful V8 and a manual transmission. I'm also partial to GM cars. I'm now going on 6 months of ownership and have already decided that this is my last Vette. It's not that I really dislike my Corvette, I think it's a great car. The LS3 pulls really hard and it's a beautiful car, but it's just does not feel the same as my LS1 or LT1 Camaros. My aunt has a 2005 LS2 GTO and I find it more fun to drive than my car, as it "feels" faster and sounds way better. Now I know my C6 would handily outrun that car, but to me it's all in the SOTP feel. I just tend to prefer the old school "all hells going to break loose when I step on the gas" feel. Why are these cars so refined?

I think the Vette is just now becoming what it should be for the amount of money it costs. I really like where the direction the Corvette is heading in terms of refinement.

I think you should put it on the market today and go back to what you love. You only live once and so should be happy.

I take it that your car is stock. Maybe you should put a good sounding exhaust on it to give you that old school "all hells going to break loose when I step on the gas" feel.

Yes, it's bone stock. I plan on putting a cold air kit on it. I'm still debating which exhaust to go with.

I had a 06 z51 with paddles. I found my car to not be what I expected. It had less exhaust then the cts. Which I had to change. The b and b exhaust handled that well. The stop feel was not there. the transmission Way smooth. It shifted very well but could not feel a rush from it even with the paddle shifter. The 6 speed would have been more exciting and a better choice for that. I have heard and wonder if a tune like the one c.o.w. does would have changed that and made the shift More firm.

But one must realize when buying a new corvette. That the biggest flaw people use to complain about is the rough ride and squeaks and noise. They use to complain it just was not a comfortable ride and no good for long trips. People complain to much. Chevy has done a good job making the car more comfortable for the majority of the crowd. There are ways to wake your beast up and give it the sotp feel for very little money. Once you do that you will complain no more. So start transforming your vette into what you want. It is easy enough done.

At least you have eliminated any doubts in your mind about Corvette/C6 ownership ~ obviously, it's just not for you.

Sorry but my opinion is the complete opposite of yours. I traded in my 06 LS2 GTO because it was too soft. It felt like I was driving my grandfather's Cadillac.

I have a MN6 Z51 and put on a Bassani cat back exhaust. This car feels like beast that handles like it is on rails. :steering:

Funny, "refinement" is why the GTO is dead. Long live the King.

The Corvette is a great high speed touring car. If you want that muscle car feel you need to open the exhaust up for that visceral sound that gives the emotion that goes with the performance.

Gannet 08-23-2008 11:19 AM

I can understand what you're saying. I've been driving GM musclecars for about 30 years, and just got my first Vette 2 1/2 years ago, an '02 coupe, recently transformed into an '09 Z06.

It's true that the Corvette, especially the C6 has become very refined. There's been a ton of whining over the years about "refinement", or lack thereof, from a ton of car magazines, and a ton of owners who probably should have bought a Porsche. GM, being interested in selling cars, listened, worked hard, and succeeded.

Indeed, I initially bought an as-new C5 instead of a new C6 in '06 because the C6 was just too "too". I eventually more or less got used to the C6, but really, the reason I bought the Z06 is because I wanted a new Corvette with a factory 427. If I could have gotten the C6Z suspension and driveline in a new C5 I'd have preferred it.

So, all that said, here's my advice: mod the C6. Believe me, if you put a set of headers, Bullets, and maybe a cam on that thing, then get an MGW shifter (if you have a stick), it will totally transform the car. It will change it from goody-two-shoes to all-hell-breaks-loose. A totally Mr. Bad-Ass, let's go burn rubber, kind of car. Not because it will be all that much faster, but it will FEEL completely different. I did that on my C5 and the transformation was astounding.

Ignore the comments from the shoulda-bought-a-Porsche crowd and be assured, you've bought what can easily be the baddest-ass hotrod you've ever driven. Welcome to Corvettes! I should have done it years ago!

:iagree: Honestly when I first got my C6 I thought the same way. Now after owning it for about a year I have come to embrace all the refinement. Im sure Chevy tried to wring as much of the Cadillac out of it as they could but a noticible amount still remains and now I think its not all that bad of a blend.

tfkrato 08-23-2008 11:29 AM

No, I don't think it's too refined.

No! ;)

The cold air package isn't going to change how the car feels, so IMO don't waste your money . . . I've always enjoyed my Corvettes - - this one is my 10th-- but I felt the C6 was a bit "tame" . . . I put a Bily Boat 66 exhaust system on it and it's finally beginning to feel and sound like I wanted the car to feel . . .reminiscent of the earlier cars.

If you want to make a change that you can feel in your seat of the pants, I'd suggest looking at an exhaust and/or headers . . .the GTO's just another sedan for me . . .no comparison IMO.

meadowz06 08-23-2008 11:39 AM

Compared to my previous car, 02 Z06, the C6 feels alot more refined and quiet. The interior is much nicer. The raw nature of the car is gone.
But that was the nature and purpose of the Z06. I just got the C6, so I am still adjusting.

Mad*Max 08-23-2008 11:43 AM

No.

mongooseC6 08-23-2008 11:45 AM

Actually, "refined" is not a description of the C6 I own. I would never called it that.

mpuzach 08-23-2008 11:52 AM

Sorry, but if you prefer an LS1 or LT1 Camaro or a GTO to a C6 Corvette, there's not really anything anyone here can do for you. Apparently you're just not the type of person the Corvette is designed for.

Take the traction control off and hit the gas to see if hell does not break loose. Anyway, some refinement is needed to tame the HP... pardon me please, can you pass me the GREY POUPON.
