OCTOBER 2008 issue of Hot Rod Magazine

had an article about comparing 8 various GM Performance Parts crate engines (SBC, BBC, and LSX), installing each into a '69 Chevelle and making passes at the drag-strip.

Forum-member Red 69 showed this issue to me at Orlando Speed World Dragway last evening, but it is already off fthe newstands, and I can't find it:
if anybody can supply me with a link to that story, so that I may view it & print, it'd be greatly-appreciated!

Hotrod.com has a video highlight of it...on the left hand side of the web page in the "Featured Highlights". Click on the "Tech Articles" tab and it is like the 6th one down.

I just finished with the magazine today. If you cannot get a copy of the article online, I can send you the magazine. Just PM me if you want it.

That was a pretty neat article. I was really glad to see them do it.

There were a few surprises in there for sure!

Of course it was a very well hooking drag car....much better than most...but it provides great info to plan with. I'd like to see that 572 with some better heads on it!

Does HotRod not have a website with the archives?

Glen I can drop it in the mail one day this week. You should see it pretty darn quickly since we are so close this week.

Here's the CNN version......

They took a pretty decently sorted out 3360-3560 lb (depending on engine)'69 Chevelle with a T-400 and a 9" on 10.5"x28" tires. They traded gears and converters as needed to make them run the best they could.

Here's the quick rundown:

LS-7 7.0 liter(LSX)-3420 lbs, 4.44 gears, 10.78@120.33 mph

LS-3 6.2 liter(LSX)-3386 lbs, 4.44 gears, 11.33@114.23 mph

LS327-(LSX with carb)-3334 lbs, 4.44 gears, 12.35@ 105.67

ZZ4-350- 3360 lbs, 4.30 gears,12.44@ 105.67 mph

ZZ383- 3360 lbs, 4.30 gears, 11.70@111.71 mph

ZZ427- 3520 lbs, 4.30 gears, 11.35@115.94

ZZ572/720- 3560 lbs, 4.11 gears, 10.21@128.98 mph

LSX454- (LSX)- 3448 lbs, 4.11 gears, 10.75@120.33 mph (tuning issues)

I was actually surprised to see how fast some of the small blocks ran. The ZZ572/720 ran about what we've seen here..so that seems to validate the results. They were using loose converters and pulling wheelies etc...so it just goes to show what having a car that can hook up can produce!

They also did some dyno testing with some headers on the 540 project motor.
