What kind/brand of jack do you use?
 

I've tried to change my oil before at my father's home (he has several types of jacks), but we were unable to get the jack under the frame. We even tried running it up on boards first, but this proved to be a pain in the rear. The boards kept sliding out of place, so we scrapped it and went to Jiffy Lube. I would much rather change the oil myself, for the obvious cost savings.

I don't have access to a mechanics jack, and I'm not going to dig a hole to drive over. Is there a certain type/brand of jack that slides under the vette or can be driven over? Also, where might one purchase one of these? TIA

I use a regular floor jack but I done put the car up on boards first.

Did you cut an angle on the boards? Cut them to a 45 degree angle. I did and I have no problems getting the car on the boards.

We used smaller boards to equal a ~ 45 degree angle. I'll try cutting some larger boards and give it a go.

My father has a jack just like that. We tried it, and it wouldn't fit under the jacking point. Is the Norco lower than other jacks of this type?

The low saddle height is 3.75 inches. It fits under the side to reach the jack points. It also fit under the rear to reach the rear cross-member. I do have to run the front wheels up on a 2 stacked 2 x 8 boards to reach the front cross-member.

Mine is a Sears brand (2 1/4 ton I think). It came in a plastic case and I think I got it on sale for about $40. I use a 2*6 to drive the tires on so I can get the clearance I need to slide the jack under. I use the hockey jacking pucks to jack it up from. :)

Purchase a set up Rhino Ramps from Pep Boys ($28), then you can place a jack anywhere you want.

A vintage 1981 Cadillac jack with a bearing race on top to spread the load. It easily fits under the frame; no ramps needed, just jack stands for safety. The drivers' side goes up without screwing around and it was cheap, 0$. There must be millions of these in junk yards.

FWIW, I got the Rhino ramps for the front; use two shorter 2x12's to brace the ramps against the garage "lip" by the wall so ramps don't move forward.
Also two 8 foot 2x12's to aid entering and coming down off the ramps; this also gets the car up in the rear. My jack was purchased at SAM's for about $70 (3 1/2 ton); I remove the jack "cup" and use a flat 1/4 in thick 4 x 6 inch piece of steel to lay across the two ribs of the rear crossmember, and jack up the rear. Then put A/C Delco jack stands under the rear lift point under the sides of the car (2/12's are removed temporarily after jacking up).

I've rolled it up onto 1x4 boards. I now have 1x10 boards

I gifted myself at Christmas with a AC DK13HLQ. It's huge and kinda pricey, but it'll fit under and easily lift everything I plan to put on it. And when you're shopping for jacks, do you really want to go cheap, especially if you're the one that's going to be under what it supports?

Drive the car up on Rhino ramps ($25 at Walmart) and then jack up the rear with any 19-inch hydraulic floor jack. Place jack stands underneath and change the oil. It's that simple!
