Saving an old 1956 Gasser: Bad Blood update (lots of Pics)

Well, I finally decided to get busy on the Corvette.
Right after the Good Guys FT Worth show I considered selling it.
A guy came out for a look and while I was telling him how cool it was and how I could never replace it for what I was considering letting it go for, my sales pitch to him turned into inspiration for ME!
So here is some of the work that has been done (by my Dad and myself)
This is what Dad drug home in 2006.

He started puting the floor back in.

Dad didn't take a whole lot of photos but this is where I pick up. The fenderwells in the trunk were kinda tricky.

There were a couple wierd holes for what I assume was a roll bar at some point that I had to patch.

Oh yeah.... I also found out a little more about it.
It was supposedly in the Bakersfield Autorama show in 1978 where it reportedly won a trophy for something and it was also supposed to have a picture in a 1978 issue of either Hot Rod or Car Craft Magazine.
I found some lettering from the guy that painted it on the nose.
It says:

PAINT...
CLYDES CUSTOM
BAKERSFIELD

SIGN
MAKER
77

I couldn't get it to show up in photos since the gold pinstripe is so faded.
Here are a few more.

that will be really sweet when you are done....are you planning on putting a EFI type motor in it with stacks sticking up through the hood? I really like the stance, really BAD A$$!

Coming along nicely! The HT looks a lot better on your car than hogging the corner of my garage!
Very cool that you finally found out some history on it..........

I like it! I just dropped my 56 project to the bodyshop for paint, nice to see others still working on these old cars.

It's getting a 454 with a powerglide. I'm old school. Just a carb for me. I would like to try the old Hilbourne injector thing, but I've heard they are only good for idle or wide open.
I might try a tunnel ram. Not sure yet. I'll just be happy to get it going with what I have.

man, I love that car. Cant even afford to look at projects.:willy:

Shurshot 10-31-2008 05:48 AM

So cool

Plus doing it with your dad makes it even better

Tunnel rams look good and are old school.

I AGREE!
Are you going to repaint it the same way?
Good Luck with it.
Keep posting as you go along.

That is cool! LOVE the look.

BOSS gasser! Front end seems a little low for mid-'60s, but correct for late '70s.

I vote for a single carb on a tunnel ram. Hide it inside a bugcatcher scoop.

Harps 10-31-2008 01:35 PM

Yeah, that has an awesome stance to it! Great to see it coming back together too.

That car needs, cries out for, a roller cammed 301, polished 6-71 and a Hilborn two port!

Very Cool

427Hotrod 11-01-2008 06:19 PM

Looking great! Please don't *restore* it too much! I'd install at least an old 3 point roll bar or a 4 to 6 point one to keep the vibe.

Definitely needs something sticking through the hood. But it has to have 2 carbs if you do...no single carb deals. They just don't look or run right. It's not hard to get a tunnel ram street friendly...I've run a few in the past and since I'm in the area I can help you out if you need it. For more $$$ you can get a Hilborn stack injection converted to EFI that will work.

A nice 8-71 blower would be great!

I like the slots with just a little more tire on the rear.

Love to see it someday!

JIM

I am surprised they didnt put a straight axle under it, from an old econo, ford van. That was the hot set up in the mid to late 60s.Great job you are doing.

56Krash 11-03-2008 02:01 PM

Glad you guys like it.
The rear slots are 15x 8.5 with a 3.5 back space. I used some 265 x 15 SUV tires for rollers so I could make sure I got the rear fenderwells back in correctly.
I'm kind of a slotted mag wheel junkie! These fronts are 15x 4.5 I have a set of 3.5 but I like the backspacing of these better.
I also have some 15 x 10's with 3" backspacing that will most likely go on the back with a big nasty slick of some sort.
I'm leaning towards the tunnel ram set up on the 454.
I'm starting on the motor in a week or two.
Just gonna be a good pump gas motor with a lumpy cam.
Oh I also scrapped the powerglide idea due to finding a killer deal on a TH 350 that is already built and ready to go. I think I'll be happier with the 350 anyway.
I'm hoping to have the the motor and trans ready to go back to Dad's shop by Thanksgiving......we need to finish the 4 link fab and install motor mounts.

I also have an original brake pedal assembly on the way. (sometimes Ebay is a life saver!)
Now I just have to decide on my master cylinder.

This is my first Corvette, and they used to scare me.
Not so much anymore.
When you start with junk, it's kinda hard to mess it up.

That's the best line I've heard on here for a while! Awesome car, can't wait to see the update pics.

This is a great project. Love the fact that the fender scoops are shaved, later tail light lenses, no grill (begging for a Moon tank in there), rear bumpers/exhaust openings removed/filled, all vintage Hot Rodder mods of that era. I'll be curious when you drop that big block in how much lower the front will drop. Nothing that can't be cured. This car has so much potential and you and Dad are on the right track. I like it all except the steering wheel :D which I see you removed in the later pic. Keep us updated.

Well these are really odd cars. They don't logicially make sence to me. I don't like all the body shims to get them to line up.
But my Dad says they are like art, not science. If looks right then it is right. Thats kind of a hard concept when you are used to things that are a little closer, tollerence wise.

427Hotrod 11-04-2008 07:37 AM

Sure we can't get a 4 speed put back in that dude? Wheelies are fun!

Keep slots for sure!

JIM
