New Dyno numbers on 406 Corvette and 355 Firebird

The local dyno shop that I use (West Bend Dyno) has asked me tune all of their 1995 and older GM cars. To get me familiar with their dyno operation they allowed me to bring in my Corvette and Firebird and tune them in on the dyno (Mustang dyno). The only change to the Corvette from the last time I ran it was the addition of 48lb injectors from the previous 30lb injectors. The only change to the Firebird was the change to 30lb injectors from 24lb injectors. To make a long story short after eight hours of put zing with the air fuel ratio and spark curves I was able to set new highs for both cars. The Corvette after tuning went from 442 RWHP and 400 RWTQ to 454 RWHP at 6250 RPM and 403 RWTQ at 5300 RPM. The Firebird went from 346 RWHP at and 382 RWTQ to 369 RWHP at 5300 and 5650 RPM and 400 RWTQ at 3900 RPM.
I attribute the changes to being able to fine tune the fuel and spark requirements on both engines. In the past due to time (Dyno rental fees) I just got the cars close. This time I was able to fine tune the combinations to leave very little on the table.

I have attached the Firebird sig to this e-mail you can see what the combination is, the Corvette is listed in my sig.

Very good. Shows what fine tuning can do. :)

awsome, I will be talking to you again about tuning a chip after my gears and engine mods !

stout 406.. i should have saved up to build a 400+ inch motor over the 383. Its gonna be hard to get over 420whp with a 383 :(

Way to go! :thumbs::cool:

When I finally get my butt in gear and a tear apart my 383, I'll have to get a hold of you to give it a tune. I've had my 85 sitting in my basement for 2 years now. Maybe this winter I will get time......

Any chance you would sell your 406 to me ?? :)

LE2's are 400-410 range. LE3/LE4 cars maybe up near 430-440 but I have a HSR intake and i'm not quite sure yet if it can support that kinda of rpm that the miniram/lt1 intakes can do. Plus those LE3/LE4 setups are pretty big cam setups so driveability goes down alittle. I have plans for a much larger cam so we'll see what i can do with this motor :)

plus i got a small block so being non reverse cooled i cant run the 12 to 1 compression or so that some of those LT1/LT4 cars are running. Thats a good bit of power right there

a good tuner can go along way in finding HP and those results show that. Good job.

The heads and cam get all the credit or all the blame as far as dyno #'s but dyno results are a result of everything from air filter to tail pipe and all in between.

A customer with stock TB, stock intake, 1 5/8 headers, cat back exhaust, mail order tune, etc, etc, that did not degree cam, did not check pushrod length, etc, etc will see less power than the same heads and cam that has . . . .

58 MM TB, ported intake, 1 3/4 headers, 3" true duals with X pipe and bullet mufflers, dyno tune, etc, etc, that DID degree the cam, measure PR length, etc, etc.

Lots of ways to lose HP and the people that limit these things will see better results. Here are some results with LE2 heads that could have came out 20-40 HP lower if the customers had lesser complimenting parts and less dedication to getting things right.

Here is a 383 with LE2 head and LE3 cam (466 RWHP) . . .

Here is a 355 with LE2 heads and GM 847 cam (440 RWHP) . . .

I will be running 11.6 CR.

Brian. What's the specs on the TFS heads again? I remember you saying they were heavily ported?

Any way you can put a dyno graph up on the 406?
