Installed my Homelink module in my visor

After reading a few threads a while back about people installing homelinks in their visors, I decided to do the same. I bought a homelink module on ebay. If you can't find just the module, you can buy a salvage visor from any other vehicle that has one and just tear it open and pull it out.

So this morning I took out all the threads/stitching holding the visor together, opened it up and proceded with the install. I used this thread as a guide:
http://www.digitalcorvettes.com/foru...light=homelink

It is an excellent guide, and I just pretty much followed it to the letter. I marked off the area, used a cutting wheel on the dremel to cut off the pressed wood section where the module would go. I bought some double sided tape and taped the module in place, then spliced into the visor lighting just as the above thread shows on the pictures. I plugged it in to verify it was getting power and then disconnected it again. Total time to install the module into the visor was maybe an hour, and that's with searching around some for the tools/parts I needed. It was very easy.

I took the visor up to an auto upholstery shop in plano and the guy working there was nice enough to sew it back together for me on the spot. He took only a few minutes, and he refused to take any payment for it.. very very nice of him.

Then I brought it back home, installed the visor and programmed both the garage door and the apartment gate openers. Total time to program them was maybe 3 minutes. It was extremely easy.

Overall an excellent addition to the car, and the total cost was $40

Very nice! Clean looking, reasonable cost, and most of all useful.

Great mod. I installed a homelink mirror with auto dimming feature and led lights.
I love not having to worry about someone stealing my garage door opener.

Thats awsome, I must do it. So the module only needs power? I looked on e-bay and there were several different modules with pricing all over the place.

Very cool. Me want.

yep, just tap into the power and ground wiring that's already right there for the mirror lighting. very simple. use that link from digital corvettes when you install yours.. it's perfectly detailed with pictures on how to do it.

So, if someone were to get into your vehicle, what's to stop them from stealing the visor/HOMELINK and using battery power it to get into your garage? Or would loss of 12v power cause a loss of memory? Can the HOMELINK even be used with battery power? Provided of coarse they can figure out how to get the visor off the mount... ;)

To the original poster, nice professional looking job. Also, you don't find many shops willing to do something for gratis anymore, especially these days.

I'd like to have that!

Very cool. Where did you get the mirror?

Stickman81 12-01-2008 06:15 PM

Well done.

I did mine a couple of years ago using the same basic instructions.
I had both my visors recovered as they looked bad and had the droopy ear syndrome.

I guess anyone could rip out a visor or mirror and put power too it to open the garage door. But:

#1 my insurance would cover the damage to the car VS. paying for a $25.00 remote

#2 I could change the code on the door opener :yesnod:

#3 the a$$hole would have 30 seconds to turn off the home alarm system:yesnod:

Did the homelink mirror hook right up with the stock connector or did you have to modify it?

I had to modify it but all but the switched ignition wire is already up there:thumbs:
I just tapped into the one I had already run for my radar detector:yesnod:

It uses it's own connector also.the mount was the same as stock.

I did this mod this past summer and think very well of it. It's powered by the constant hot illuminated mirror wiring as it draws current only when being used. eBay is a good source for transmitters ($25-$40) but only buy a transmitter that does "rolling codes". There are some out there that don't, and will be a waste of time and $$$. :flag:
